


{"id":86575,"date":"2026-02-07T15:45:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-07T10:15:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=86575"},"modified":"2026-02-07T15:45:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-07T10:15:07","slug":"shaheed-udham-singh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/shaheed-udham-singh\/","title":{"rendered":"Shaheed Udham Singh, Biography, Early Life, Jallianwala Bagh Massacre"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shaheed Udham Singh was a revolutionary freedom fighter of India who avenged the Jallianwala Bagh massacre by assassinating Michael O\u2019Dwyer, the then Lieutenant Governor of Punjab.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Shaheed Udham Singh Early Life<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sardar Udham Singh was born on <\/span><b>26 December 1899<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Sunam, in present-day <\/span><b>Sangrur<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> district of <\/span><b>Punjab<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the time of his birth he was named <\/span><b>Sher Singh.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His father, <\/span><b>Tehal Singh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, belonged to the Kamboj community and worked as a low-skilled, low-paid manual laborer, while his mother was named <\/span><b>Narain Kaur.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was <\/span><b>orphaned at an early age<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and was brought up at the <\/span><b>Central Khalsa Orphanage in Amritsar <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">where he was named <\/span><b>Udham Singh.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At a very young age he started working for his survival. He worked as a labourer in Mesopotamia during <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/world-war-1\/\" target=\"_blank\">World War I<\/a><\/strong>. He also went to Africa to work in the railways of Uganda. During his time in Uganda he became familiar with a lot of workers of the Ghadar Party.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also went to America where he helped Punjabi Migrants from Mexico to reach America. He formed the <\/span><b>Azad Party in Chicago<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a part of Ghadar Party.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Shaheed Udham Singh and Jallianwala Bagh Massacre\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shaheed Udham Singh was about 20 years old when he witnessed the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/jallianwala-bagh-massacre\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Jallianwala Bagh massacre<\/strong><\/a>, where General Dyer ordered firing on innocent, unarmed people. The incident became a turning point in his life and he decided to take revenge.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><b>1924<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he <\/span><b>joined the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/ghadar-party\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ghadar Party<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to overthrow colonial rule.
