These mountains are important for<\/span><b> minerals, timber, water resources<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and have <\/span><b>influenced rivers, climate and human settlements in the region<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Appalachian Mountains<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Appalachian Mountains<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are a major highland system in <\/span><b>eastern North America<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and are considered the eastern counterpart of the Rocky Mountains. They stretch for about <\/span><b>2,000 miles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>from Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada to central Alabama in the USA<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The range acts as a <\/span><b>natural barrier<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between the eastern Coastal Plains and the Interior Lowlands, influencing settlement and development.
