They run from <\/span><b>North to South<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and include some of the <\/span><b>highest peaks in the United States<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as <\/span><b>Mount Whitney<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The range is known for its <\/span><b>steep slopes, deep valleys and glaciers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and they play a crucial role in <\/span><b>climate, rivers and water supply of the region<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Sierra Nevada Mountains<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sierra Nevada lies between the <\/span><b>Central Valley<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the west and the <\/span><b>Basin and Range Province<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the east, extending from the <\/span><b>Mojave Desert to the Cascade Range<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The range is famous for its <\/span><b>high peaks, scenic landscapes and giant sequoia trees,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the largest trees in the world.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is an important source of<\/span><b> water, hydroelectric power<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and was a key region during <\/span><b>the California Gold Rush<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, though human activities like mining and tourism have changed its natural landscape.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Sierra Nevada Mountains Physical Features<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Physiography<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Sierra Nevada is an asymmetrical mountain range<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with its highest peaks and steep slopes on the eastern side.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Most peaks are 11,000-14,000 feet high; Mount Whitney (14,494 feet) is the highest <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">peak in the contiguous United States.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>northern part of the range is lower<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with heights mostly between 7,000 and 9,000 feet.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geologically, the range is mainly made of <\/span><b>granite<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, along with some<\/span><b> metamorphic rocks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>volcanic rocks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially in the northern section where it connects with the <\/span><b>Cascade Range.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Geology<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Sierra Nevada is an uplifted and tilted block<\/b> <b>of the Earth\u2019s crus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t, formed due to <\/span><b>faulting<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><b>major fault lies on the eastern side,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> along which the land was pushed upward and <\/span><b>tilted westward, making the range asymmetrical.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>eastern slope is steep,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with deep canyons formed by erosion from wind, rain, ice and frost.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> western slope is gentle,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where rivers deposit sediments and form <\/span><b>large alluvial fans extending into California\u2019s Central Valley.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although uplift began millions of years ago, <\/span><b>major uplift occurred in the last 2 million years,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> giving the range its great height today.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Drainage and Glaciation<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>western slope<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the Sierra Nevada is gentle and has long rivers like the <\/span><b>Yuba, American, Merced and Kern,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which mostly flow into the <\/span><b>Sacramento-San Joaquin river system<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and finally reach the Pacific Ocean.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most rivers rise in<\/span><b> deep valleys carved by glaciers in hard granite rocks.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the <\/span><b>Pleistocene period<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>large glaciers covered the mountain valleys<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> several times and shaped the landscape.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These glaciers formed<\/span><b> U-shaped valleys, cirques, moraines and many glacial lakes,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> especially on the western side.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Famous features like<\/span><b> Yosemite Valley and Lake Tahoe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are results of <\/span><b>glacial erosion;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Lake Tahoe is one of the <\/span><b>largest and deepest alpine lakes in the world.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Climate<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Sierra Nevada has a mild mountain climate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as it lies in the <\/span><b>mid-latitudes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is close to the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/pacific-ocean\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Pacific Ocean<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which lowers the extreme temperatures.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The range runs <\/span><b>northwest to southeast,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so <\/span><b>moist winds from the Pacific give heavy rainfall and snowfall<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the western slopes, while <\/span><b>the eastern slopes remain dry<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to the rain-shadow effect.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Most rainfall occurs from November to April<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>snowfall increases with height<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with deep snow cover on higher northern peaks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><b>summer, a high-pressure system over the Pacific<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> brings dry weather; when it remains strong for many years, the region may face <\/span><b>long droughts.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Flora and Fauna<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sierra Nevada shows <\/span><b>distinct vegetation zones<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> based on altitude, from foothill forests to alpine plants above the tree line.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Lower and upper slopes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have deciduous trees, pines, fir, cedar, and giant sequoias,
