It stretches from the hills of Manipur in India down to Cape Negrais on the coast of Myanmar, forming a <\/span><b>natural barrier between Myanmar and the Indian subcontinent.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>Arakan Yoma Mountains Key Features<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geologically, Arakan Yoma is a <\/span><b>young fold mountain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> system formed due to <\/span><b>tectonic interaction between the Indian Plate and the Eurasian Plate.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of the continuous tectonic interaction, it is a <\/span><b>seismically active region.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>highest point of Arakan Yoma Mountain is Nat Ma Taung (Mount Victoria) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with an elevation of about 3,000 metres.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It forms a <\/span><b>natural boundary between Coastal Rakhine (Arakan) region and Central Myanmar plains.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Arakan Yoma Mountain Ecology<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Arakan Yoma Mountain range is an <\/span><b>ecologically significant region of Southeast Asia <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and forms an important part of the <\/span><b>Indo-Myanmar biodiversity hotspot, one of the world\u2019s richest ecological zones.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The range is covered predominantly by <\/span><b>tropical evergreen and semi-evergreen forests<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in areas receiving high rainfall, especially along the western slopes. In drier eastern parts, <\/span><b>moist and dry deciduous forests <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are more common.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Flora<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The Arakan Yoma supports high floral diversity, including valuable timber species such as teak, bamboo, and medicinal plants.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fauna<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The forests provide habitat to elephants, leopards, <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/clouded-leopard\/2\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>clouded leopards<\/strong><\/a>, barking deer, hoolock gibbons, and numerous bird species. The region also acts as an important wildlife corridor between South Asia and Southeast Asia.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Arakan Yoma Mountain Climatic Significance<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Arakan Yoma Mountain range plays a crucial role in shaping the climate of Myanmar and the adjoining <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/bay-of-bengal\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Bay of Bengal<\/strong><\/a> region.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It acts as a <\/span><b>natural barrier to the southwest monsoon winds <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">originating from the Bay of Bengal. When these moisture-laden winds strike the western slopes of the Arakan Yoma, they are forced to rise, leading to <\/span><b>orographic rainfall along the coastal Rakhine region.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> As a result, the western coastal belt of Myanmar receives very heavy rainfall, making it one of the wettest parts of the country during the monsoon season.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It creates a <\/span><b>rain-shadow effect on its eastern side<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
