It describes how the Sun, planets, and other celestial bodies developed from a massive cloud of gas and dust called a nebula. This theory was first proposed by philosophers and scientists like <\/span><b>Immanuel Kant and Pierre-Simon Laplace<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the 18th century. Even today, it forms the base of modern theories related to planetary formation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is Nebula?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><b>nebula <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a large cloud of gas, dust, and other cosmic particles found in outer space. These clouds are often considered the birthplace of stars and planetary systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nebulae are mainly made of <\/span><b>hydrogen and helium gases<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, along with small amounts of other elements. They are formed when stars explode or when gas and dust gather together due to gravitational forces. He suggested that the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/solar-system\/\" target=\"_blank\">Solar System<\/a><\/strong> was formed from a large rotating cloud of gas and dust.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kant believed that the universe was originally made of <\/span><b>cold, solid, and unmoving particles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These particles <\/span><b>collided due to gravitational force<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which produced heat and started motion.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The motion created <\/span><b>angular momentum<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, causing the particles to rotate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gradually, this rotating mass developed into a <\/span><b>hot nebula<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the nebula rotated faster, it generated <\/span><b>centrifugal force<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which led to the formation of rings of matter.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These rings cooled down and eventually formed <\/span><b>planets and satellites<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kant accepted the existence of <\/span><b>primordial matter<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but he did not explain where this matter originated.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also failed to explain the <\/span><b>source of energy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that caused the particles to start moving.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Nebular Hypothesis of Laplace<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Nebular Hypothesis of Laplace was introduced by French mathematician Pierre-Simon Laplace in 1796. He expanded Kant\u2019s ideas and gave a more detailed explanation of planetary formation.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pierre-Simon Laplace expanded Kant\u2019s theory and suggested that the nebula was made of <\/span><b>gases instead of solid particles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He believed that all celestial bodies, including the <\/span><b>Sun, planets, stars, and <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/asteroid\/\" target=\"_blank\">asteroids<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, were formed from a nebula cloud.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Initially, there was a massive cloud made of <\/span><b>hydrogen, helium, and dust particles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, similar in size to the present Solar System.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the nebula rotated rapidly, <\/span><b>lighter gases like hydrogen and helium moved toward the centre<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Continuous collisions among gases led to <\/span><b>fusion reactions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which formed the <\/span><b>Sun<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Heavier elements moved away from the centre<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which resulted in the formation of planets.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sun mainly consists of lighter elements, while planets are made of <\/span><b>heavier materials<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The planets later formed smaller nebulas around them.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Continuous rotation, friction, and fusion led to the development of a <\/span><b>disk-shaped cloud<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, forming planets and satellites.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Nebular Hypothesis of Laplace Criticism<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laplace did not explain the <\/span><b>origin of the nebula<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including the source of its heat and motion.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The theory failed to clarify why the nebula produced a <\/span><b>specific number of rings and planets<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is difficult to believe that an entire ring of matter could condense into a <\/span><b>single planet<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to dynamical theory, rings would likely <\/span><b>break into several pieces<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, forming multiple planets.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to weak cohesion among nebula particles, ring formation should have been <\/span><b>continuous<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, not occasional as suggested by Laplace.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the Sun was the remaining centre of the nebula, it should show a <\/span><b>bulge at the equator<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but such a bulge is not observed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If planets formed from nebula gases, they should initially exist in <\/span><b>liquid form<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which would make stable rotation and revolution difficult.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only <\/span><b>solid bodies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can maintain stable orbits and shapes during rotation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the theory, all satellites should rotate in the <\/span><b>same direction<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as their planets, but some satellites of <\/span><b>Jupiter and Saturn rotate in opposite directions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nebular Hypothesis explains the formation of the Solar System from a rotating cloud of gas and dust.
