It was based in the North-West Frontier Province, which is now part of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also called the <\/span><b>Red Shirts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><b>Surkh Posh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it started as a social reform group called <\/span><b>Anjuman-e-Islah-e Afghania<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, focused on education and ending traditional blood feuds among Pashtuns.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Khudai Khidmatgar Movement Political Role<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Khudai Khidmatgar Movement was led by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/khan-abdul-ghaffar-khan\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Abdul Ghaffar Khan<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, popularly known as Bacha Khan, Badshah Khan, or the Frontier Gandhi. Initially, it focused on social reforms, but as the British targeted its members, it became more political. By 1929, many leaders were exiled, and numerous members arrested.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The movement tried to get support from the All-India Muslim League and the Indian National Congress. After being rejected by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/muslim-league\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Muslim League<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Khudai Khidmatgars formally joined the Congress and played an important role in India\u2019s fight for independence.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Khudai Khidmatgar Movement Achievements and Elections<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to public pressure, the British released Bacha Khan and eased restrictions on the movement.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/government-of-india-act-1935\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Government of India Act 1935<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, men were allowed to vote in the NWFP.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the <\/span><b>1937 elections<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Khudai Khidmatgars, allied with the Congress, won. Bacha Khan\u2019s brother, <\/span><b>Khan Abdul Jabbar Khan (Dr. Khan Sahib)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, became Chief Minister.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They also won the <\/span><b>1946 elections<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with Dr. Khan Sahib re-elected.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Khudai Khidmatgars opposed the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/partition-of-india\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>partition of India<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, siding with Congress and the <\/span><b>All India Azad Muslim Conference<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When Congress accepted partition without consulting them, Bacha Khan said, \u201c<\/span><b>You have thrown us to the wolves<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Khudai Khidmatgar Movement Post-Partition Struggles<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After India and Pakistan were partitioned, the Khudai Khidmatgars faced severe backlash in Pakistan:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their government was dismissed, and the movement banned.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many members were killed in the <\/span><b>Babrra massacre<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on <\/span><b>12 August 1948<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><b>2011<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the movement was revived in Delhi by <\/span><b>Faisal Khan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, focusing on communal harmony and disaster relief, with around 5,000 members.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Abdul Ghaffar Khan (Bacha Khan)<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Born in <\/span><b>1890<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Bacha Khan was a follower of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/mahatma-gandhi\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Mahatma Gandhi<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a leader of the Pashtuns.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He joined politics in <\/span><b>1919<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, protesting the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/rowlatt-act\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Rowlatt Acts<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that allowed imprisonment without trial.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><b>1920<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he joined the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/khilafat-movement\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Khilafat Movement<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and in <\/span><b>1921<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, became president of a district Khilafat committee.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><b>1929<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he founded the <\/span><b>Red Shirt movement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Khudai Khidmatgar).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1987, he became the first non-Indian awarded the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/bharat-ratna-award-winners\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Bharat Ratna<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, India\u2019s highest civilian honor.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other notable non-Indians who received the Bharat Ratna include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/nelson-mandela\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Nelson Mandela<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1990), and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/mother-teresa\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Mother Teresa<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1980), who was the first naturalized citizen to
