It is now a protected monument and an important heritage site.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Jhansi Fort<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The details of Jhansi Fort such as its history, structure, features, and importance are discussed below. The fort is an important historical monument known for its strong architecture and its connection with India\u2019s past.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Jhansi Fort Location and Origin<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jhansi Fort is built on a<\/span><b> rocky hill called Bangara<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in present-day Uttar Pradesh.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier, the town was known as<\/span><b> Balwant Nagar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fort served as an important stronghold in the Bundelkhand region from medieval times.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jhansi Fort was built<\/span><b> by Raja Bir Singh Deo of Orchha in 1613.<\/b><\/li>\n<li <\/span><b><i>\u201cjhainsi\u201d<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meaning unclear or indistinct, based on a local legend related to <\/span><b>Raja Bir Singh Deo of Orchha.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Jhansi Fort History and Rulers<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the 18th century, the region saw political struggles.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><b>1742, Naroshankar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was appointed Subedar (governor) of Jhansi.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He strengthened and expanded the fort (the extension was called Shankergarh).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also constructed important buildings.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Later, several Subedars ruled Jhansi.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raghunath Rao (II) Newalkar improved administration, increased revenue and built temples like Mahalakshmi Temple and Raghunath Temple.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After weak rulers, the British accepted <\/span><b>Gangadhar Rao as the Raja of Jhansi.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was known as a capable and kind administrator.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><b>1842, he married Manikarnika Tambe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who later became famous as Rani Lakshmibai.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Role in the Revolt of 1857<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the death of Gangadhar Rao, <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/jhansi-rani-lakshmibai\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rani Lakshmibai<\/a> became the ruler.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She used the fort as her main residence.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1858, British forces led by <\/span><b>General Hugh Rose attacked Jhansi.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After heavy fighting, <\/span><b>the fort was captured on 4
