{"id":88023,"date":"2026-02-16T16:18:06","date_gmt":"2026-02-16T10:48:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=88023"},"modified":"2026-02-16T16:46:45","modified_gmt":"2026-02-16T11:16:45","slug":"leiogalathea-samudragiri","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/leiogalathea-samudragiri\/","title":{"rendered":"Leiogalathea Samudragiri"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Leiogalathea Samudragiri Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers recently discovered a new species of squat lobster named Leiogalathea samudragiri off Lakshadweep\u2019s coast.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Leiogalathea Samudragiri<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a new species of<\/span><b> squat lobster.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was found living 360 metres <\/span><b>below the surface near Minicoy,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> part of the <\/span><b>Lakshadweep archipelago.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The discovery was made<\/span><b> during a research cruise<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as part of <\/span><b>India\u2019s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ambitious <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/deep-ocean-mission\/\" target=\"_blank\">Deep Ocean Mission<\/a> (Samudrayaan <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">program).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L. samudragiri possesses smooth, uninterrupted ridges running across the top of its shell, whereas its closest relatives have ridges that are broken or interrupted.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also features exactly six transverse ridges on the back half of its body.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It lacks a specific spine on its feelers<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(antennules) that is commonly found in similar species.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is<\/span><b> bright orange <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in colour.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>What are Squat Lobsters?<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are <\/span><b>marine crustaceans<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that <\/span><b>resemble small lobsters<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but are <\/span><b>not true lobsters.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are more <\/span><b>closely related to hermit crabs and porcelain crabs.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are well over 900 species of squat lobsters, and they can be found in nearly <\/span><b>every marine environmen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t across <\/span><b>most latitudes around the world.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They have <\/span><b>small, flat bodies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ranging from 0.7 to 3.5 inches (1.778 to 88.9 mm) in length.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These <\/span><b>decapods (ten-footed) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have a <\/span><b>front pair of legs <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that are much <\/span><b>longer than their bodies that end in a pair of large claws.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lobsters <\/span><b>earned their name by tucking their tails under their thorax<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, giving their <\/span><b>bodies a shorter, more \u201csquat\u201d appearance.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with many other crustaceans, squat lobsters can <\/span><b>use their tail as a paddle to escape backwards <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">very quickly.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source:<\/b> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/researchmatters.in\/news\/new-bright-orange-squat-lobster-species-identified-lakshadweeps-coast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">RM<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Leiogalathea samudragiri is a new species of squat lobster found living 360 metres below the surface near Minicoy, part of the Lakshadweep archipelago.
