It involves the use of wooden sticks, swords and other traditional weapons. Gatka is not only a form of self-defence but also a <strong>part of Sikh cultural and religious heritage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Gatka Martial Art Key Details<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The word <strong>\u201cGatka\u201d<\/strong> comes from the Persian word <strong>Khutka<\/strong>, meaning a leather-covered stick used in fencing.<\/li>\n<li>It was introduced by the <strong>6th Sikh Guru, Guru Hargobind<\/strong>, during the Mughal period as a system of <strong>self-defence<\/strong>. He also gave the concept of <strong>Miri-Piri<\/strong>, which means the <strong>balance between spiritual and temporal power<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>10th Sikh Guru, <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/guru-gobind-singh\/\" target=\"_blank\">Guru Gobind Singh<\/a><\/strong>, further strengthened this martial tradition and founded the <strong>Khalsa<\/strong>, a community of warriors dedicated to justice and protection of the weak.<\/li>\n<li>Gatka developed as a <strong>safer and simplified form of Shastar Vidya<\/strong>. Instead of sharp swords, practitioners use wooden sticks <strong>(soti)<\/strong> and small shields <strong>(farri)<\/strong> for practice and safety. It is also known as <strong>Gatkabaazi<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The martial art combines stick fighting, weapon training and controlled combat techniques, while also teaching discipline, courage, resilience, self-control and honour.<\/li>\n<li>Earlier, Gatka was mainly performed in gurudwaras, Nagar Kirtans and traditional akharas, but over time it developed into a sport with two forms &#8211;<strong> Virasat (traditional style) and Khed (sport style).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>After the formation of the <strong>Gatka Federation of India in 2008<\/strong>, Gatka received official recognition as a <strong>sport and is now open to people of all religions.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Other Martial Arts in India<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Kalaripayattu (Kerala) <\/strong>&#8211; It is one of the <strong>oldest martial arts of India<\/strong>. The word Kalari means a <strong>training ground or schoo<\/strong> It mainly teaches self-defence techniques, body control and physical fitness and includes both armed and unarmed combat.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Silambam (Tamil Nadu)<\/strong> &#8211; This martial art uses a variety of weapons, especially <strong>long bamboo sticks<\/strong>. Its movements are inspired by animals like the snake, tiger and eagle, showing speed and flexibility.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Thang-Ta (Manipur)<\/strong> &#8211; It is a traditional martial art of the Meitei community and is also called <strong>Huyen Langlon<\/strong>. It includes fighting with swords and spears as well as unarmed techniques known as Sarit Sarak.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lathi (Punjab and Bengal)<\/strong> &#8211; This is a simple stick-based martial art practiced mainly in rural areas. It is now performed as a traditional sport in villages.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mardani Khel (Maharashtra)<\/strong> &#8211; Developed by the Marathas, this martial art focuses on the use of swords and other traditional weapons. It is mainly practiced in Kolhapur.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pari-Khanda (Bihar)<\/strong> &#8211; This style involves the use of sword and shield.
