She played an active role in India\u2019s national movement. She is <\/span><b>popularly called as the \u201cGandhi Buri\u201d (Old Lady Gandhi) of Bengal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for her unwavering commitment to non-violence and civil disobedience.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Matangini Hazra Early Life<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matangini Hazra was <\/span><b>born on 19 October 1870<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a small village in the <\/span><b>Tamluk region of present-day West Bengal.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She belonged to a poor peasant family and had no formal education.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She <\/span><b>married at a very young age<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to Trilochan Hazra, a 60 year old man and became a widow early in life at the age of 18.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After her husband\u2019s death, she devoted herself to social service and later to the freedom struggle.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matangini Hazra was <\/span><b>deeply influenced by <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/mahatma-gandhi\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mahatma Gandhi<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Gandhian ideology of <\/span><b>non-violence (Ahimsa)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>civil disobedience <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and therefore she was popularly called as the <\/span><b>\u201cGandhi Buri\u201d (Old Lady Gandhi) of Bengal.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Matangini Hazra Role in Freedom Struggle<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matangini Hazra became an <\/span><b>active member of Indian National Congress <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>actively participated in India\u2019s freedom struggle movement.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She actively participated in the <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/non-cooperation-movement\/\" target=\"_blank\">Non-Cooperation Movement<\/a> (1920-22), <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/civil-disobedience-movement\/\" target=\"_blank\">Civil Disobedience Movement<\/a> (1930-34) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/quit-india-movement\/\" target=\"_blank\">Quit India Movement<\/a> (1942).\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the Civil Disobedience Movement (10930-34) she was <\/span><b>arrested for her role in the Salt Satyagraha movement in Bengal.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the Quit India Movement (1942) she <\/span><b>led a procession of thousands of freedom fighters,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mostly women, to take over the Tamluk Police Station from British authorities.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the Tamluk procession, the British police opened fire on the unarmed demonstrators.
