Kashmir government is mulling to take advantage of the suspended Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) by diverting, for the first time, water from the Ravi river in Punjab to the Jammu region, and pushing for the revival of the Tulbul Navigation Barrage project.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Tulbul Navigation Barrage Project<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Tulbul Navigation Barrage Project, also known as the <\/span><b>Wullar Barrage,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a <\/span><b>navigation lock-cum-control structure<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> located at the <\/span><b>outlet of Wullar Lake,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><b>J&amp;K.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was designed to <\/span><b>facilitate navigation on the Jhelum River during lean winter months<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Oct-Feb).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>work <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the project had<\/span><b> started in 1984<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but had to be <\/span><b>stopped due to objections by Pakistan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> under IWT.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was originally designed as a 439-ft-long and 40-ft-wide structure with a storage capacity of 0.30 million acre-feet.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The barrage, <\/span><b>once completed, would have regulated <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><b>water of the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/wular-lake\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wular Lake <\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to <\/span><b>maintain a minimum draft of 4.4 ft in the river up to Baramulla<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during the winter season.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This minimum draft <\/span><b>would have ensured round-the-year navigation <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over a 20-km stretch <\/span><b>between Baramulla and Sopore.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides, the project would have provided water and helped in <\/span><b>firming up power generation in downstream<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hydroelectric plants such as the <\/span><b>Uri I and II hydro projects<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Key Facts about Wular Lake<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the <\/span><b>largest freshwater lake <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in India and the <\/span><b>second largest freshwater lake in Asia.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is located in the Bandipore district of<\/span><b> Jammu and Kashmir.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>fed by<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>Jhelum River.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lake lies at an altitude of 1,580 m on the<\/span><b> foothills of Haramuk Mountain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is spread over a total area of 200 sq.km., covering almost 24 km in length and 10 km in breadth.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lake basin was formed as a <\/span><b>result of tectonic activity.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1990, it was designated as a Wetland of International Importance under the <\/span><b>Ramsar Convention.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/jammu-and-kashmir\/with-indus-water-treaty-in-abeyance-jammu-and-kashmir-plans-to-harness-river-waters\/article70640260.ece\/amp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TH<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tulbul Navigation Barrage Project is a navigation lock-cum-control structure located at the outlet of Wullar Lake, in J&#038;K.
