The word \u201cSengol\u201d comes from the Tamil term \u201cSemmai\u201d, meaning righteousness or moral order. This sacred sceptre gained national importance during India\u2019s Independence in 1947 when it symbolised the formal transfer of power. In May 2023, during the inauguration of the new Parliament building, Prime Minister Narendra Modi installed the original Sengol near the Lok Sabha Speaker\u2019s seat, restoring its constitutional and cultural significance for the nation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Sengol in Parliament<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sengol has been installed in the Lok Sabha chamber of the new Parliament House in New Delhi, placed prominently beside the Speaker\u2019s podium. It is the same sceptre that was presented to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/jawaharlal-nehru\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jawaharlal Nehru<\/a><\/strong> on the eve of Independence. It was preserved at the Allahabad Museum in Prayagraj for decades along with several belongings of Nehru. It was relocated in 2023 to mark continuity between India\u2019s freedom moment and present governance.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Sengol in Parliament Historical Background<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sengol\u2019s origin lies in a traditional <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/chola-dynasty\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chola Dynasty<\/a><\/strong> ritual symbolising legitimate transfer of authority.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lord Mountbatten asked how the British would formally signify power transfer to Indian leadership.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">C. Rajagopalachari suggested following the Chola coronation custom of handing a sacred sceptre.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Chola dynasty, a high priest sanctified royal succession by presenting a Sengol to the new ruler.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Thiruvavaduthurai Adheenam was approached to create and bless the sceptre.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vummidi Ethiraju and Vummidi Sudhakar of the Vummidi Bangaru Chetty family designed and handcrafted the 5 foot sceptre in the Madras Presidency.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 14 August 1947, emissaries carried it from Tamil Nadu to Delhi for ceremonial handover.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A priest briefly presented it to Mountbatten before transferring it to Nehru at his residence.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A devotional hymn composed by 7th century saint Tirugnana Sambandar was sung during the ceremony.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After Independence, the sceptre was placed in the Allahabad Museum in Prayagraj for decades.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2023, it was moved to the new Parliament building.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Sengol in Parliament Features<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The design\u00a0 of Sengol in Parliament reflects symbolic meaning rooted in justice and moral authority.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Material Composition<\/strong>: The sceptre is made of silver and coated with gold plating, encasing a solid wooden staff inside.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Dimensions<\/strong>: It measures approximately five feet, or about 1.5 metres, in total height. The upper portion has a diameter of around three inches, tapering to nearly one inch at the bottom.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Nandi Figure<\/strong>: A seated Nandi bull is placed at the top, symbolising justice, righteousness and vigilance.
