The Goddess who is worshipped during the famous Chhath Puja is known as\u00a0Chhathi Maiya\u00a0(also known as\u00a0Usha, wife of the sun god).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Meaning of word chhath:<\/strong>The word\u00a0chhath\u00a0means\u00a0sixth\u00a0and the festival is celebrated on the sixth day of the month\u00a0Kartika\u00a0of the Hindu lunar\u00a0Bikram Sambat\u00a0calendar.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rituals:<\/strong>The festival is observed over a period of\u00a0four days.\u00a0They rituals include holy bathing, fasting, standing in water for long periods of time, and offering\u00a0prayers and food to the setting and rising sun.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Who observe it?<\/strong>The main worshipers, called Parvaitin, are usually women. However, many men also observe this festival as Chhath is not a gender-specific festival.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Regions:<\/strong>The festival is observed most elaborately in\u00a0Mithila Province of Nepal,\u00a0Terai-Madhesh region of Nepal, Indian states of\u00a0Bihar,\u00a0Jharkhand\u00a0and\u00a0UP.
