The Nawabs of Awadh were considered loyal allies of the British. Despite this loyalty, Awadh was <\/span><b>annexed by the British on the ground of\u00a0 \u201cmisgovernance\u201d.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>British Annexation of Awadh Background<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Since 1801, Awadh had been under a Subsidiary Alliance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Over time, the Subsidiary Alliance weakened the state financially and politically. <\/span><b>Under subsidiary alliance, the Nawab was required to maintain British troops within his territory and bear the cost of their upkeep. In return, the British promised protection from external threats.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> However, this arrangement gradually reduced the independence of the Awadh administration. The heavy financial burden of maintaining subsidiary forces forced the Nawab to impose higher taxes on the people, which contributed to treasury bankruptcy and administrative decline.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lord Dalhousie directed Resident <\/span><b>Sleeman<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to tour the state and report on its condition. Sleeman described widespread disorder, and his successor <\/span><b>Outram<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> confirmed these findings. Dalhousie initially preferred placing Awadh under permanent British administration while allowing the Nawab to retain his title, but the Court of Directors ordered complete annexation and abolition of the throne in 1856. <\/span><b>Nawab Wajid Ali Shah <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">refused to sign away his rights and was exiled to Calcutta.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Reasons for British Annexation of Awadh\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Awadh was annexed because of following reason:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lord Dalhousie, the Governor-General, accused Nawab Wajid Ali Shah of maladministration and corruption.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The British argued that the people of Awadh were suffering due to poor governance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dalhousie claimed annexation was necessary to ensure better administration and protect the interests of the people.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The real motive, however, was to expand British territory and gain direct control over Awadh\u2019s rich resources.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1856, Awadh was formally annexed, and Wajid Ali Shah was deposed and exiled to Calcutta.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Impact on Society and Economy<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The annexation disrupted the established social order of Awadh.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many taluqdars lost large portions of their land under new revenue settlements.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peasants faced higher revenue demands and stricter collection methods.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Local industries and traders suffered under new regulations and taxation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The traditional judicial system based on Shariat and customary laws was replaced by a Western-style legal system.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thousands connected to the Nawab\u2019s court lost employment and status.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of improving governance, the annexation created widespread economic hardship and resentment.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Role in the Revolt of 1857<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The annexation of Awadh played a decisive role in the outbreak and spread of the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/revolt-of-1857\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Revolt of 1857<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many sepoys in the British army were from Awadh and felt personally insulted by the annexation of their homeland.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dispossessed taluqdars supported the rebellion to regain their lost authority.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peasants joined due to heavy taxation and economic distress.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lucknow became one of the most important centres of resistance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The revolt in Awadh was intense and prolonged, reflecting deep-rooted anger against British rule.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Awadh became a symbol of British aggression and
