They are an important natural and cultural feature of the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Seshachalam Hills<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seshachalam Hills are a group of hills in the <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/eastern-ghats\/\" target=\"_blank\">Eastern Ghats<\/a> of southern Andhra Pradesh, in southeastern India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They are surrounded by the <\/span><b>Rayalaseema <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">uplands in the west and northwest and the Nandyal Valley in the northeast. The hills cover about 8,000 square km and mostly run in an east-southeast direction.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Seshachalam Hills Climate and Vegetation<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hills have only thin forests because rainfall is low. The area has a semi-dry climate and the rugged land makes farming difficult.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Climate<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The region is hot and dry for most of the year.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It lies in the rain shadow area of the Eastern Ghats, so it receives less rainfall.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summers are very hot, while winters are moderate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the rainfall occurs during the monsoon season.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Vegetation<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The forest is mainly a Tropical Southern <\/span><b>Dry Mixed Deciduous forest.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some sheltered valleys, moist <\/span><b>deciduous and semi-evergreen trees are also found.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The forest is famous for the <\/span><b>endangered Red Sanders tree<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Pterocarpus santalinus), which is found naturally only in this region.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The area is rich in biodiversity and is known for many medicinal plants.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Seshachalam Hills Drainage and Physical Features<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Seshachalam Hills are part of a hill range with rugged landforms. The area has steep slopes, deep valleys, and narrow gorges, giving it a rough and uneven landscape.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Drainage System<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hills are part of the Pennar River basin and are connected to the eastern drainage system.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many small streams flow eastward and join the <\/span><b>Pennar River<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because rainfall is low, many streams are seasonal (ephemeral) and flow mainly during the rainy season.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These streams cut deep valleys in the hills.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Streams and Waterfalls<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The region has many small streams, some of which are permanent while others are seasonal.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Important water features include<\/span><b> Tumburu Theertham<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is a perennial stream and waterfalls like Chakalibana Waterfall.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other well-known valleys and water spots include Tumburu Valley and Ramakrishna Theertham.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Geological Influence<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The drainage pattern of the hills is influenced by rocks such as <\/span><b>sandstone, shale and limestone. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These rocks help shape the valleys and streams.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the Seshachalam Hills are part of the Eastern Ghats, they are located close to the <\/span><b>Swarnamukhi River<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> basin in the east and the Pennar River basin in the north.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Cultural and Religious Significance<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Tirumala is an important Hindu pilgrimage<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> town located on the Seshachalam Hills near the city of Tirupati.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hills have seven peaks named Anjanadri, Garudadri, Narayanadri, Neeladri, Seshadri, Venkatadri and Vrishabhadri. The highest peak is about 1000 metres (3,300 feet) above sea level. According to Hindu mythology, these seven peaks represent the seven hoods of Shesha, the king of serpents.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Sri Venkateswara National Park<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is also located in these hills. Another important feature is the Tirumala Natural Arch, a famous natural rock formation. It was formed long ago, during the Middle to Upper Proterozoic period.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Seshachalam Biosphere Reserve<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hill ranges spread in parts of Chittoor and Kadapa districts of Andhra Pradesh have been designated as <\/span><b>Seshachalam Biosphere Reserve in Andhra Pradesh in September 2010.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the <\/span><b>first biosphere reserve of Andhra Pradesh.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The total area of the reserve is about 4,756 square kilometres.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The biosphere reserve is known for its rich <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/biodiversity\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>biodiversity<\/strong><\/a>. It has <\/span><b>dry deciduous forest<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s and many types of plants and animals. The region is world-famous for the <\/span><b>endangered Red Sanders<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Pterocarpus santalinus) tree, which is found naturally only in this area.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also home to rare animals like the <\/span><b>Slender Loris<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
