The organisation is widely known for initiatives such as the <\/span><b style=\"font-size: inherit;\">IUCN Red List of Threatened Species<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which assesses the conservation status of species across the globe.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is a global environmental <\/span><b>organization working for nature conservation and sustainable use of natural resources.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was <\/span><b>established in 1948.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>headquartered in Gland, Switzerland.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IUCN brings together <\/span><b>governments, NGOs, scientists and experts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to address environmental challenges.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>does not directly manage wildlife parks or enforce environmental laws<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Instead, it <\/span><b>functions as a scientific and policy advisory organisation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that helps governments and international bodies design better conservation strategies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IUCN has <\/span><b>observer status in the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/united-nations-environment-programme-unep\/\" target=\"_blank\">United Nations Environment Programme<\/a> (UNEP) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and contributes to international agreements related to climate change, biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Initiatives<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has launched several global initiatives to promote biodiversity conservation, ecosystem protection and sustainable development.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>IUCN Red List of Threatened Species<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most important contributions of the IUCN is the <\/span><b>IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which was formally developed in 1964.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Red List<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is considered the world\u2019s most comprehensive database for assessing the extinction risk of plants, animals and fungi.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It provides scientific information about species population, habitat, distribution, ecological role, threats and conservation status.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Red List categorises species into groups such as <\/span><b>Critically Endangered, Endangered, Vulnerable, Near Threatened and Least Concern.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other important categories include <\/span><b>Data Deficient (DD),<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which indicates insufficient scientific information, and <\/span><b>Extinct (EX) or Extinct in the Wild (EW)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which indicate that no surviving wild populations exist<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is widely used by governments, conservation organisations, researchers and policymakers for environmental planning.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>IUCN World Conservation Congress\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The IUCN also organises the World Conservation Congress every four years, which is one of the largest global gatherings on conservation issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The congress brings together around 1300+ member organisations, including countries, NGOs and indigenous groups, to discuss global environmental policies and biodiversity protection strategies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IUCN World Conservation Congress took place in Abu Dhabi, UAE.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>S2S (Source-to-Sea) Action Platform<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Launched by the Stockholm International Water Institute in 2014.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since 2025, it has been hosted by IUCN.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Focuses on sustainable management of water systems from river sources to oceans.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>World Heritage Outlook Programme<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assesses conservation status of natural World Heritage Sites.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The World Heritage Outlook 4 Report provides updated ecological risk evaluation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4th edition of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Heritage Outlook, released in 2025, findings:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report noted that biodiversity decline continues globally despite ongoing conservation efforts. Many species populations are still decreasing, particularly coral reef species, amphibians, freshwater fishes and forest-dependent wildlife.
