However, with Hormuz shipments effectively suspended, abundant Russian supplies could help India manage potential shortages.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>India\u2019s Oil Dependence and the Strait of Hormuz<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around 2.5\u20132.7 million barrels per day of India\u2019s crude imports pass through the Strait of Hormuz.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This accounts for nearly <\/span><b>half of India\u2019s total oil imports<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, mainly from Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Kuwait.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India is the world\u2019s third-largest crude oil consumer and imports over 88% of its oil needs.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A large share of its gas consumption also depends on imports from West Asia through the Strait.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Strategic Importance of the Strait of Hormuz<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway between Iran and Oman connecting the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the world\u2019s most critical oil transit chokepoint, handling about one-fifth of global petroleum and LNG trade.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following messages from Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps claiming closure of the Strait, many traders, insurers, and shipping companies suspended shipments to avoid conflict risks.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Russian Crude as an Alternative<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With Hormuz shipments disrupted, India may turn to Russian oil. Russian crude is available in significant volumes in the Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea, including in floating storage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Industry estimates suggest about 10 million barrels of Russian crude are currently available in Asian waters.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Changing Import Patterns<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India imported about 1.1 million barrels per day of Russian crude in February, lower than the 2025 peak of over 2 million barrels per day.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loadings for Indian ports, which averaged 1.7 million barrels per day last year, fell to 0.7 million barrels per day in February.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This earlier reduction in Russian imports has now created room for a possible increase if supply from the Strait of Hormuz remains disrupted.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>India\u2019s Immediate Energy Cushion<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indian refiners currently hold more than 10 days of crude oil inventories and about a week\u2019s worth of fuel stocks.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, roughly a week\u2019s supply of crude is available in India\u2019s strategic petroleum reserves.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These buffers provide short-term protection against sudden supply disruptions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Alternative Sourcing Options<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To manage potential shortages, India can draw from strategic reserves and accelerate spot purchases from non-Hormuz regions.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alternative suppliers include the United States, West Africa, Latin America, and Russia.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Russian crude available in nearby waters, including floating storage, offers immediate flexibility if Middle Eastern imports are constrained.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Risk Depends on Duration of Disruption<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The overall impact on India will depend on how long the Strait of Hormuz remains disrupted. Most experts believe a prolonged blockade is unlikely.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the longer the disruption continues, the greater the effect on global energy markets and domestic fuel prices.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>LPG and LNG: Key Vulnerabilities<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LPG is India\u2019s biggest vulnerability. The country imports 80\u201385% of its LPG needs, mostly from Gulf suppliers through Hormuz.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike crude oil, India does not maintain large strategic LPG reserves, making supplies more sensitive to disruption.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, around 60% of India\u2019s LNG imports pass through the Strait.
