{"id":91044,"date":"2026-03-05T13:40:59","date_gmt":"2026-03-05T08:10:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=91044"},"modified":"2026-03-05T15:26:34","modified_gmt":"2026-03-05T09:56:34","slug":"cassava-brown-streak-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/cassava-brown-streak-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"Cassava Brown Streak Disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Cassava Brown Streak Disease Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, a study warns that more than a third of Africa is at risk of Cassava Brown Streak Disease<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Cassava Brown Streak Disease<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a devastating <\/span><b>disease that causes loss of cassava root <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(tuber) production and quality.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Cause:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is caused by two types of virus, <\/span><b>Cassava Brown Streak Virus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CBSV) and <\/span><b>Ugandan Cassava Brown Streak Virus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (UCBSV).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was <\/span><b>first identified in Africa <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the coastal region of <\/span><b>East Africa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> close to the mid-20th century.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its presence has now been confirmed in several eastern, central and southern African countries, including Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Congo, the DRC, South Sudan, Malawi and now Zambia.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Spread:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is primarily <\/span><b>spread by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>a pest<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that exists as a complex of genetically distinct groups.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It spreads through particular whitefly populations in <\/span><b>sub-Saharan Africa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, known as <\/span><b>Sub-Saharan Africa 1 and 2<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which are highly efficient at transmitting the virus.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Symptoms of Cassava Brown Streak Disease<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of Cassava brown streak disease can be observed on leaves, stems and cassava roots<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typical CBSD symptoms are <\/span><b>leaf chlorosis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, brown streaks on <\/span><b>stems and dry hard rot <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in roots which affects both the quality and quantity of edible storage roots.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The disease causes <\/span><b>necrosis in the roots of infected plants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, often leading to total crop loss.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is observed that <\/span><b>weak clean-seed systems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>whitefly transmission<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>climate pressures<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> accelerate the spread of Cassava Brown Streak Disease.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Management of CBSD:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 Planting of <\/span><b>clean cassava cuttings<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the main way of controlling CBSD.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use <\/span><b>of resistant varieties<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the most sustainable way of controlling CBSD.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.downtoearth.org.in\/amp\/story\/wildlife-biodiversity\/deadly-cassava-virus-threatens-food-security-across-africa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">DTE<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cassava Brown Streak Disease is a devastating disease that causes loss of cassava root (tuber) production and quality.
