Key government initiatives are:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Universal Health Coverage<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India\u2019s journey towards becoming a global health powerhouse is strongly linked with its effort to provide universal health coverage. The flagship scheme <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/performance-of-ayushman-bharat-scheme\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Ayushman Bharat<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> aims to ensure affordable healthcare for all citizens, especially vulnerable sections of society. Its four major components include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>AB-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the world\u2019s largest publicly funded health assurance scheme.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ayushman Arogya Mandir<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for upgrading sub health centres and primary health centres.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; the largest pan-India scheme for strengthening healthcare infrastructure across the country.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which forms the backbone for a citizen centric interoperable digital health ecosystem.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><b>AB-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY)<\/b><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/pradhan-mantri-jan-arogya-yojana\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana<\/a><\/strong> (PM-JAY) was launched in September, 2018, to achieve universal health care.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It provides healthcare coverage up to Rs. 5 lakhs per year for secondary and tertiary care services and hospitalisation to enrolled socio-economically deprived families and to all senior citizens above 70 years.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scheme enables cashless treatment at empanelled government and private hospitals.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is considered the world\u2019s largest publicly funded health insurance programme.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scheme is aimed at the bottom 40% of the Indian population, covering 120 million people, with over 434 million Ayushman cards already made.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scheme has helped reduce the healthcare expenditure of families by increasing government spending on health insurance. It has assisted over 1 million patients.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sunoh.AI<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Uses voice technology to help doctors quickly create electronic prescriptions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Adverse Outcome Prediction Too<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">l: Uses predictive analytics to identify TB patients at risk of treatment failure, helping reduce adverse outcomes by around 27%.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>MadhuNetrAI<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Allows health workers to take retinal images, which AI analyses to identify diabetes-related eye disease, helping prioritise urgent treatment.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><b>i-DRONE Initiative<\/b><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Launched in 2021 by the Indian Council of Medical Research to use drones for delivering vaccines and medical supplies to remote areas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First implemented in Manipur and Nagaland. Drones are now being used for high-altitude medical deliveries in Himachal Pradesh, TB sample transport in Telangana, pathology sample transfers in Karnataka, and blood transport trials in Delhi NCR.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aims to improve last-mile healthcare delivery, reduce transport time, and strengthen medical logistics in difficult terrains.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>National Health Mission\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Health Mission was launched in 2013 by the Government of India to strengthen the public healthcare system, especially in rural and urban areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It integrates two major programmes: National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/national-health-mission\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Urban Health Mission<\/a><\/strong> (NUHM).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mission focuses on improving maternal health, child health, immunisation, and disease control, while strengthening health infrastructure and human resources.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also supports programmes such as the Universal Immunisation Programme, disease control initiatives, and community healthcare services.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ASHA workers play a key role in delivering healthcare services at the grassroots level.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><b>Universal Immunisation Programme,<\/b><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Universal Immunisation Programme was launched in 1985 by the Government of India to provide free vaccines to children and pregnant women.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is one of the largest public health programs targeting close of 26.7 million newborns and 29 million pregnant women annually free of cost.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the Universal Immunisation Programme, the government provides 11 vaccines to protect children and pregnant women from several life-threatening diseases. These include Hepatitis B Vaccine, Oral Polio Vaccine, Bacillus Calmette-Guerin Vaccine for tuberculosis, Injectable Polio Vaccine, Pentavalent Vaccine, Rotavirus Vaccine, Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine, Measles &amp; Rubella Vaccine, Diphtheria Pertussis Tetanus Vaccine, Tetanus &amp; Adult Diphtheria Vaccine, and Japanese Encephalitis Vaccine.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These vaccines are provided free of cost through government health centres to reduce child mortality and prevent the spread of infectious diseases.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><b>Mission Indradhanush<\/b><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Launched in 2014 by the Government of India to increase full immunisation coverage among children and pregnant women.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mission focuses on children who are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated under the Universal Immunisation Programme.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It aims to protect children from seven vaccine-preventable diseases such as diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, polio, tuberculosis, measles, and hepatitis B.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" Programme<\/b><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Launched by the Government of India on 28 February 2026 to prevent Cervical Cancer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The programme provides the Gardasil-4, a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/world-health-organisation\/\" target=\"_blank\">WHO<\/a><\/strong>-prequalified single-dose vaccine.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Targets adolescent girls aged 14 years, with vaccination provided free of cost at government health facilities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li Pariyojana\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Launched to provide quality generic medicines at affordable prices.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicines are sold through around 17,990 Janaushadhi Kendras across India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Launched to support tertiary healthcare by providing affordable medicines and medical implants.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AMRIT Pharmacies supply branded, branded-generic, and generic medicines, along with surgical items and implants.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around 255 AMRIT pharmacies are currently operating in India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" provid<\/span><b>es over 70% of global anti-retroviral medicines,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> strengthening health security for many countries in the Global South.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>India is a major global vaccine supplier, providing 55\u201360% of vaccines procured by UNICEF<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a large share of DPT, BCG, and measles vaccines.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>During the COVID-19 pandemic, India developed indigenous vaccines such as Covaxin and Covishield,
