


{"id":91663,"date":"2026-03-09T15:38:30","date_gmt":"2026-03-09T10:08:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=91663"},"modified":"2026-03-09T15:58:39","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T10:28:39","slug":"stenothoe-lowryi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/stenothoe-lowryi\/","title":{"rendered":"Stenothoe lowryi"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Stenothoe lowryi Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the first time, a rare marine amphipod, a shrimp-like species, named Stenothoe lowryi was found in Indian water at Arjyapalli in Ganjam district by marine science researchers of Berhampur University.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Stenothoe lowryi<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>rare marine amphipod.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This shrimp-like crustacean, <\/span><b>previously known only from Malaysian shores<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was <\/span><b>detected <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for the <\/span><b>first time in India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during a targeted survey at <\/span><b>Aryjapalli Beach in Odisha&#8217;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s Ganjam district.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It belongs to the <\/span><b>family Stenothoidae<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> within the<\/span><b> order Amphipoda.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It stands out with its approximate 5.5 mm body size, prominent <\/span><b>large claws <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(gnathopods), and <\/span><b>affinity for rocky intertidal habitats.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These <\/span><b>claws <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">likely<\/span><b> aid in gripping substrates and prey, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">facilitating their <\/span><b>scavenging lifestyle.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is distinguished by unique morphological traits such as specific antennal structures and pereopod (walking leg) configurations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although little is currently known about its ecological role, it is believed to contribute significantly to the marine food web.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>What are Amphipods?<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are a type of <\/span><b>small crustacean.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are members of the <\/span><b>invertebrate order Amphipoda, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><b>inhabiting all parts of the sea<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>lakes, rivers, sand beaches, caves, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>moist (warm) habitats on many tropical islands.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are <\/span><b>related to crabs, lobsters, and shrimp.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The name \u2018<\/span><b>amphipoda\u2019 means \u201cdifferent-footed.\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is because they have many <\/span><b>different kinds of legs.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike some other crustaceans, their<\/span><b> legs are not all the same.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are over <\/span><b>7,000 known specie<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s of amphipods. Most of them belong to a group called Gammaridea.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amphipods can be very tiny, about 0.1 centimeters (0.04 inches) long. But some can grow quite large, up to 34 centimeters (13 inches).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They typically have an<\/span><b> elongated body with a distinct head, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a pereon (thorax) of 7 segments, and a six-segmented pleon (abdomen).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\">Most amphipods <b style=\"font-size: inherit;\">eat tiny bits of dead plants and animals.
