{"id":91933,"date":"2026-03-10T15:01:21","date_gmt":"2026-03-10T09:31:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=91933"},"modified":"2026-03-11T15:33:40","modified_gmt":"2026-03-11T10:03:40","slug":"national-highways-green-cover-index","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/national-highways-green-cover-index\/","title":{"rendered":"National Highways Green Cover Index"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>National Highways Green Cover Index Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) released the first National Highways Green Cover Index (NH-GCI).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About National Highways Green Cover Index<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is an initiative of <\/span><b>National Highways Authority of India.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has been prepared in coordination with the <\/span><b>National Remote Sensing Centre<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (NRSC) of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The initiative aims to provide a scientific and quantitative assessment of green cover within the <\/span><b>Right of Way (RoW) along the National Highways network<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by leveraging advanced space-based technologies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Methodology Used<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The assessment is derived from <\/span><b>chlorophyll content<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> detected through high-resolution satellite sensors.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It measures th<\/span><b>e percentage of land covered with vegetation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> along highway corridors, including plantations on the left and right sides of the road, as well as in the median wherever feasible.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The analysis is conducted for every one-kilometre highway segment using the <\/span><b>Normalized Difference Vegetation Index<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (NDVI) derived from satellite imagery.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Coverage:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Approximately<\/span><b> 30,000 km of National Highways<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> spanning 24 States have been covered for the period July\u2013December 2024.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Significance<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It offers a robust, reliable, cost-effective, and time-efficient mechanism for macro-level estimation of the green cover along the National Highways.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will enable comparison, ranking, and targeted interventions for <\/span><b>improved plantation management.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pib.gov.in\/PressReleseDetailm.aspx?PRID=2237080&amp;reg=3&amp;lang=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">PIB<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>National Highways Green Cover Index is an initiative of National Highways Authority of India.
