As a form of protest, a group of colonists threw tea from British ships into the harbor. In protest against these policies and<\/span><b> \u201ctaxation without representation,\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> members of the <\/span><b>Sons of Liberty threw 342 chests of tea into Boston Harbor on 16 December 1773.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Boston Tea Party Events<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before the <\/span><b>Boston Tea Party,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> many American colonists avoided <\/span><b>British taxes by buying smuggled tea from other countries.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> To control this practice and help the financially struggling British East India Company, <\/span><b>the British government passed the Tea Act of 1773.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This law allowed the company to sell tea directly in the colonies at a cheaper price than smuggled tea.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the tea became cheaper, the colonists strongly opposed it because the tax imposed by the British Parliament was still included in the price. Accepting the tea would mean accepting Parliament\u2019s right to tax them without representation, which the colonists rejected.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On <\/span><b>16 December 1773,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> members of the <\/span><b>Sons of Liberty, led by Samuel Adams<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, disguised themselves as <\/span><b>Native Americans and boarded three British ships &#8211; Dartmouth, Eleanor, and Beaver anchored at Boston Harbor.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They threw 342 chests of tea into the water as a protest against British taxation and trade policies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This act was not just about tea but a <\/span><b>symbolic protest against British control<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over the colonies. The event spread <\/span><b>political awareness throughout the colonies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and greatly increased tensions between Britain and the colonists.
