{"id":92353,"date":"2026-03-12T13:29:07","date_gmt":"2026-03-12T07:59:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=92353"},"modified":"2026-03-12T14:04:15","modified_gmt":"2026-03-12T08:34:15","slug":"tephra","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/tephra\/","title":{"rendered":"Tephra"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Tephra Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">K\u012blauea has been erupting episodically within Hawai\u02bbi Volcanoes National Park since December 23, 2024, and although lava flows remain confined to the caldera, tephra from lava fountains may impact downwind communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Tephra<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tephra, a<\/span><b> volcanology term for ash<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is <\/span><b>small rock fragments ejected from a volcano into the atmosphere,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which is <\/span><b>then deposited around and downwind of the volcano.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>size of particles <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that fall out is l<\/span><b>argest near the volcano<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and gets <\/span><b>progressively smaller further from the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/volcanism\/\" target=\"_blank\">volcano<\/a>.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tephra produces a <\/span><b>wide range of hazards.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>When the ejected material<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <\/span><b>in the atmosphere,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it is <\/span><b>electrically charged <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and often<\/span><b> produces lightning.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several <\/span><b>people <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have been<\/span><b> killed by lightning <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from volcanic eruption clouds.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other <\/span><b>hazards <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are produced <\/span><b>when the ash is deposited on the ground.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ash can<\/span><b> disrupt electricity, television, radio, and telephone communication lines; bury roads<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other manmade structures; damage machinery; start fires; and clog drainage and sewage systems.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>kills crops, damages machinery,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is a hazard to aviators.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Tephra is heavy <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; a significant <\/span><b>accumulation on a rooftop could collapse<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a building.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, it often <\/span><b>blocks out the sun, creating darkness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and unnecessary panic.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ash can <\/span><b>produce poor visibility<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and cause <\/span><b>respiratory problems.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source<\/b><strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/media\/images\/flyer-tephra-falling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">USGS<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tephra is small rock fragments ejected from a volcano into the atmosphere, which is then deposited around and downwind of the volcano.
