It has a total length of about <\/span><b>6,300 kilometres,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> making it the most important river system in China. It is the country\u2019s most important river system, serving as a major waterway, agricultural region, and home to nearly one-third of China\u2019s population.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Yangtze River Origin and Course<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Yangtze River originates from glaciers in the Tanggula Mountains on the <\/span><b>Tibetan Plateau.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It flows eastward across China before emptying into the <\/span><b>East China Sea.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The river flows through several provinces and major cities including <\/span><b>Chongqing, Wuhan, and Shanghai.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Yangtze River Major Tributaries<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Yangtze River has eight major tributaries that contribute to its large water volume.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Left bank tributaries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include: Yalung River, Min River, Jialing River and Han River.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Right bank tributaries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include: Wu River, Yuan River, Xiang River, Gan River.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These tributaries form a vast river network that supports agriculture and water supply in different regions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Yangtze River Basin\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yangtze river basin <\/span><b>supports nearly one-third of China\u2019s population <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and plays a crucial role in agriculture, transportation, and economic development.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its river basin is around <\/span><b>1.8 million sq km &#8211; almost a fifth of China&#8217;s land area.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Yangtze basin is often referred to as <\/span><b>China\u2019s great granary.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It <\/span><b>contributes nearly half of the country\u2019s total crop production.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/major-crops-of-india\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Major crops<\/strong><\/a> grown in the region include <\/span><b>Rice, Wheat, Cotton, Corn, Barley, Beans.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fertile soil, abundant rainfall, and extensive irrigation systems make the basin one of the most productive agricultural regions in Asia.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Yangtze River basin is the <\/span><b>economic backbone of China.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It supports major <\/span><b>industries, trade, and transportation routes.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The river is widely used for inland water transport, connecting several industrial cities and ports.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Yangtze River Ecological Importance<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Yangtze River basin is rich in biodiversity and supports many plant and animal species. It provides habitat for rare and endangered species such as the Yangtze Finless Porpoise. Wetlands and lakes connected to the river are important for migratory birds and aquatic ecosystems.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Yangtze River Dams\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Yangtze River has several large dams built mainly for hydroelectric power generation, flood control, irrigation, and improved navigation.
