It develops mainly through the <\/span><b>weathering of ancient crystalline igneous and metamorphic rocks.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These soils are <\/span><b>widely distributed in the eastern and southern parts of the Deccan Plateau<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and are particularly common in regions receiving low to moderate rainfall.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Red Soil Distribution<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red soils are mainly found in the eastern and southern parts of the Deccan Plateau. They also occur in several other regions of India.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Present in large parts of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Found in states such as Odisha and Chhattisgarh.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Occur in the southern parts of the middle Ganga plain.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also seen along the piedmont zone of the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/western-ghats\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Western Ghats<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Red Soil Formation<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red soil is formed by the weathering and decomposition of ancient crystalline igneous and metamorphic rocks. Over time, the breakdown of these rocks releases minerals, particularly iron, which gives the soil its distinctive colour. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reddish colour develops due to the diffusion of iron in the oxidised state, especially in rocks rich in iron minerals.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Red Soil Characteristics<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red soils have several distinctive physical and chemical characteristics:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The soil shows a red colour due to ferric oxide present in oxidised form.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The red colour occurs due to the diffusion of iron rather than a very high iron content.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the soil occurs in a hydrated form, it appears yellow.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These soils are generally poor in nitrogen, humus and phosphorus.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are usually light textured and less fertile compared to alluvial soils.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their fertility can be improved with proper irrigation and the use of fertilizers.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Red Soil Economic Importance<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although naturally less fertile, red soils can become productive with proper management.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suitable for crops such as cotton, wheat, rice, pulses, millets, tobacco and oilseeds.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the use of irrigation and fertilizers, these soils can produce good agricultural yields.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In many parts of the Deccan Plateau, red soil supports dry farming and rainfed agriculture.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse;
