Sudan holds strategic importance for India due to energy resources, regional stability, and access to African markets. Over the decades, both countries have strengthened their partnership through high level visits, development assistance, economic collaboration, and cultural exchanges. Today, India-Sudan relations remain significant for South-South cooperation, multilateral diplomacy, and expanding economic and strategic engagement in Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>India-Sudan Relations Evolution<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The evolution of the India-Sudan Relation has been listed below:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Historical evidence suggests that commercial interactions existed between the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/indus-valley-civilization\/\" target=\"_blank\">Indus Valley Civilization<\/a><\/strong> and Nilotic regions through Mesopotamian trade routes.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diplomatic engagement with Sudan began in 1955 with the opening of India\u2019s representation in Khartoum.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India contributed to Sudan\u2019s infrastructure through two steel suspension railway bridges installed in Khartoum and Atbara.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Political interactions between Indian and Sudanese leaders influenced Sudan\u2019s independence movement.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prominent Indian leaders visited Sudan during the pre-independence era, like <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/mahatma-gandhi\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mahatma Gandhi<\/a><\/strong> visited Port Sudan in 1935.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first Sudanese parliamentary elections in 1953 were supervised by Sukumar Sen, India\u2019s first Chief Election Commissioner.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the 1970s, both countries have signed numerous agreements covering culture, science and technology, trade, media cooperation, agriculture, and business collaboration.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India and Sudan established the Joint Committee on Economic, Technical, Commercial and Cultural Cooperation in 1995, later upgraded to a Joint Ministerial Commission in 1997.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>India-Sudan Relations Areas of Cooperation<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India and Sudan collaborate across economic, technological, educational, and development sectors strengthening strategic engagement and mutual development partnerships.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Strategic Importance of Sudan<\/strong>: Sudan occupies a strategic location connecting North Africa, the Middle East, and sub-Saharan Africa. For India, Sudan is important due to its energy resources, trade routes, and role in regional stability, making it a valuable partner in India\u2019s broader Africa engagement policy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Bilateral Trade Relations<\/strong>: Trade between India and Sudan has grown steadily over time. Bilateral trade volume reached approximately 134 billion USD in 2023.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Indian Exports to Sudan<\/strong>: Major exports include sugar, pharmaceuticals, machinery, textiles, petroleum products, and food items.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Sudanese Exports to India<\/strong>: Sudan supplies several agricultural commodities and natural products to India.
