{"id":92839,"date":"2026-09-06T11:19:43","date_gmt":"2026-09-06T05:49:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=92839"},"modified":"2026-09-06T16:01:17","modified_gmt":"2026-09-06T10:31:17","slug":"valles-marineris","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/valles-marineris\/","title":{"rendered":"Valles Marineris"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Valles Marineris Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A vastly larger outburst flood occurred on Mars during the Late Hesperian to Early Amazonian, when the breaching of paleolakes in Valles Marineris, the largest canyon system in the Solar System, unleashed a massive deluge.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Valles Marineris<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Valles Marineris, or <\/span><b>Mariner Valle<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>y<\/strong>, is a <\/span><b>vast system of interconnected canyons<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the planet <\/span><b>Mars<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The system was <\/span><b>discovered <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">during, and named for, the <\/span><b>Mariner 9 mission in 1971.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The canyons extend in an <\/span><b>east-west direction<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for roughly <\/span><b>4,000 km<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> just <\/span><b>south of the equator.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>By comparison<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Earth\u2019s natural wonder, the<\/span><b> Grand Canyon,<\/b> <b>is only<\/b> <b>446 km long.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is<\/span><b> one of the larger canyons in the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/solar-system\/\" target=\"_blank\">solar system<\/a>.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>spans <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about <\/span><b>20 percent<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the entire <\/span><b>circumference of Mars.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Individual canyons<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are typically<\/span><b> 200 km across<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and have <\/span><b>walls 2\u20135 km high.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the <\/span><b>centre <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the system,<\/span><b> several canyons merge to form a depression <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">600 km<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">across and 9 km deep.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The canyon system contains a number of different features that give clues to its formation.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Some of the canyon walls<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> appear to be <\/span><b>fault scarps <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that formed as a <\/span><b>result of crustal movement along faults radiating from the Tharsis rise<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <strong>a<\/strong><\/span><b>n enormous volcanic bulge <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to the northwest.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Erosion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, however, has also played a<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">significant role<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in canyon formation, as indicated by<\/span><b> deep gullies cut in the walls.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In places, the canyons contain <\/span><b>thick sedimentary sequences<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that may have been <\/span><b>deposited in lakes that formerly occupied<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the canyons.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These lakes later may have drained catastrophically to the east, where there is evidence of large floods.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>News: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/sci-tech\/science\/valles-marineris-flood-may-have-raised-ancient-martian-sea-level-by-34-metres\/article71427793.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><b>TH<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Valles Marineris is a vast canyon network on Mars, stretching about 4,000 km across the planet\u2019s equatorial region.
