{"id":92839,"date":"2026-03-15T13:19:43","date_gmt":"2026-03-15T07:49:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=92839"},"modified":"2026-03-15T17:24:04","modified_gmt":"2026-03-15T11:54:04","slug":"valles-marineris","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/valles-marineris\/","title":{"rendered":"Valles Marineris"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Valles Marineris Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By combining laboratory experiments with orbital data, researchers recently identified an unusual iron sulfate\u2014ferric hydroxysulfate\u2014forming in layered deposits near the massive Valles Marineris canyon system. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Valles Marineris<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Valles Marineris, or <\/span><b>Mariner Valley,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a <\/span><b>vast system of interconnected canyons<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the <\/span><b>planet Mars.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The system was <\/span><b>discovered during, and named for<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><b>Mariner 9 mission in 1971.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The canyons extend in an east-west direction for roughly <\/span><b>4,000 km just south<\/b> <b>of the<\/b> <b>equator<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By comparison, <\/span><b>Earth&#8217;s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">natural wonder, the <\/span><b>Grand Canyon, is only 446 km long.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>one of the larger canyons<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the<\/span><b> solar system.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It spans about <\/span><b>20 percent of the entire circumference of Mars.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Individual canyons<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are typically <\/span><b>200 km<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> across and have <\/span><b>walls 2\u20135 km high.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>At the centre<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the system, <\/span><b>several canyons merge to form a depression <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">600 km across and 9 km deep.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The canyon system contains a number of different features that give clues to its formation.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Some of the canyon walls <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">appear to be<\/span><b> fault scarps <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that formed as a<\/span><b> result of crustal movement along faults radiating from the Tharsis rise<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an <\/span><b>enormous volcanic bulge <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to the northwest.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Erosion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, however, has also <\/span><b>played a significant role <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in canyon formation, as indicated by <\/span><b>deep gullies cut in the walls.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In places, the canyons contain <\/span><b>thick sedimentary sequences<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that <\/span><b>may have been deposited in lakes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that <\/span><b>formerly occupied <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the canyons.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These lakes later may have drained catastrophically to the east, where there is evidence of large floods.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2026\/03\/260309225228.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SD<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Valles Marineris is a vast canyon network on Mars, stretching about 4,000 km across the planet\u2019s equatorial region.
