201.3 million years ago to 33.9 Million Year (Ma).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The LMA is a <\/span><b>long-extinct volcanic system<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> evolved <\/span><b>through three major phases<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of geological activity over tens of millions of years.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>160\u2013110 million years ago<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Early island arc formation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>103\u201345 million years ago:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Intensified magmatism during plate convergence<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Less than 45 million years ago:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Post-collisional magmatic activity<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Process of Formation of Ladakh Magmatic Arc<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Millions of years before the region that is now called Ladakh lay above an ocean called the <\/span><b>Neo-Tethys Ocean.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below that ancient sea, giant slabs of Earth\u2019s crust slowly plunged into the mantle in a <\/span><b>process known as subduction<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> leading to the formation of <\/span><b>the Ladakh Magmatic Arc<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (LMA).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Phases of Formation of Ladakh Magmatic Arc<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Island Arc Formation: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In its earliest stage, <\/span><b>Ladakh resembled a chain of volcanic<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> islands rising from the Neo-Tethys Ocean.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Represented by the <\/span><b>Dras\u2013Nidar Island Arc Complex<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (DNIAC)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Magma primarily originated from the mantle<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minimal contribution from subducted sediments<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Crustal Enrichment and Batholith Formation: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As tectonic plates converged, the system evolved:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Formation of large granite bodies <\/span><b>known as the Ladakh Batholith<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (LB)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased input from continental crust and recycled sediments<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chemical signatures indicate deep crustal processes and magma mixing<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This phase coincides with the <\/span><b>approaching collision between India and Eurasia.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Post-Collision Magmatism: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the plates collided and the <\/span><b>Neo-Tethys Ocean closed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, tectonic activity continued:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Formation of <\/span><b>mafic dykes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014vertical sheets of volcanic rock<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Magma derived from a previously enriched mantle source<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indicates lingering tectonic and magmatic activity even after collision<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pib.gov.in\/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=2241356&amp;reg=3&amp;lang=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">PIB<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ladakh Magmatic Arc is a belt of igneous rocks in the Trans-Himalaya formed in the period Jurassic to Eocene- 201.3 million years ago to 33.9 Million Year (Ma).
