{"id":9364,"date":"2022-10-19T02:31:23","date_gmt":"2022-10-18T21:01:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=9364"},"modified":"2025-03-29T12:51:36","modified_gmt":"2025-03-29T07:21:36","slug":"antiquities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/antiquities\/","title":{"rendered":"Antiquities"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Antiquities returned:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Vishnu and Lakshmi with Garuda, dating to the 11th century C.E., which was allegedly stolen from a temple in Central India.<\/li>\n<li>A Chola-era Sambandar bronze idol, a Chola-era Devi idol in stone, bronze idols of Vinayaga, Narasimha with Lakshmi, a wooden idol of Muruga and wooden chauri bearers are other items that had been taken from Tamil Nadu.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Antiquities:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cAntiquity\u201d is an article or object that is at least 100 years old.<\/li>\n<li>It could be a coin, sculpture, painting or epigraph, or any object or article taken from a building or a cave, or anything that illustrates the science, art, crafts or customs or religion or literature of a bygone age, or anything of historical interest.<\/li>\n<li>If it is a manuscript or record of any scientific, historical, literary or aesthetic value, it should be at least 75 years\u2019 old.<\/li>\n<li>An art treasure is a human work of art, other than an antiquity, declared to be a treasure by the Centre for its artistic value after the artist\u2019s death.<\/li>\n<li>Antiquities in India are governed by\u00a0<strong>The Antiquities and Art Treasures Act, 1972 which falls within the purview of the Archaeological Survey of India (&#8220;ASI&#8221;), Union Ministry of Culture.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Possession of an antiquity:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Possession of an unregistered antiquity is a punishable offence under law.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Section 14(3)<\/strong>\u00a0of the Act makes it mandatory for \u201cevery person who owns, controls or is in possession of any antiquity\u201d to register it before a registering officer within 15 days of its coming into his control or possession and obtain a certificate of registration.<\/li>\n<li>Antiquities can be sold, but only by a licensed person. However, Section 3 of the Act prohibits export of an antiquity by anyone other than the Centre or its agencies.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Punishment:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>A jail term of\u00a0<strong>six months<\/strong>, or with fine, or both.
