They are pantheists who make provision for the presence of spirits in humans and objects.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their main deity is a virgin <\/span><b>goddess called Kanniamma,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who is deeply associated with the cobra.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Settlements:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Irula houses are built together in small settlements or villages called <\/span><b>mottas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mottas are usually <\/span><b>situated on the edges of steep hills<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and are surrounded by a few dry fields, gardens, and forests or plantations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Irula community is traditionally associated with <\/span><b>healing, traditional medicine, and catching poisonous snakes.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Economy:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Cattle production is another <\/span><b>source of income.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In the forests they collect wild resources like honey, frankincense, firewood and the like.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Traditional Knowledge:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Irulas\u2019 knowledge of snakes and snake venom is legendary.
