rising menace of \u201c<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/combating-digital-arrest-scams\/\" target=\"_blank\">digital arrest<\/a><\/strong><b>\u201d scams<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A high-level Inter-Departmental Committee (IDC), set up by the Union Home Ministry in December 2025, met with WhatsApp representatives and asked the platform to implement these measures.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>What is Digital Arrest Scam<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a digital arrest scam, fraudsters:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Impersonate law enforcement officers (CBI, police, ATS, etc.) on video calls.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tell victims they are under investigation for serious crimes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psychologically trap them and coerce them into transferring large sums of money to avoid &#8220;arrest&#8221;.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These scams are entirely fake \u2014 no real agency conducts arrests over video calls.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>How Big is the Problem<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1.23 lakh cases of digital arrest were recorded in 2024 alone \u2014 nearly three times the number in 2022.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Total estimated losses<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: nearly \u20b93,000 crore.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Supreme Court took suo motu cognizance (acted on its own) of the issue in October 2024, expressing &#8220;grave concern&#8221;.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fraudsters use mule accounts (third-party bank accounts) to move crores across banks and state borders within minutes, making them hard to trace.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Background: Government\u2019s Response<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Inter-Departmental Committee (IDC)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was constituted by the Union Home Ministry in December 2025<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It brings together multiple government departments to tackle digital arrest scams in a representatives made detailed submissions about the platform&#8217;s existing detection and enforcement mechanisms.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Key Measures WhatsApp Has Been Asked to Implement<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WhatsApp has been asked to implement various measures to tackle the threat of digital arrest, including the impersonation of law enforcement officers to perpetrate the scam.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Blocking Device IDs of Repeat Offenders<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WhatsApp has been asked to assess and block the Device IDs (unique identifiers of phones\/devices) used in digital arrest scams.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This would prevent repeat offenders from simply creating new accounts on new or the same gain access to victims&#8217; devices.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WhatsApp has been asked to strengthen its technology to detect
