These sources are cleaner alternatives to fossil fuels as they emit less pollution and greenhouse gases. These systems can be deployed in both urban and rural areas and are increasingly integrated with electrification for efficient energy use.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Renewable Energy in India<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has transitioned from a power deficit nation at Independence to a power surplus country with over 4 lakh MW installed electricity capacity. Today, India is the world\u2019s third largest Renewable Energy producer. As of November 2025, total non fossil capacity reached 262.74 GW, accounting for about 50% of total installed capacity of 509.64 GW.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Sectors of Renewable Energy in India<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India\u2019s Renewable Energy sector includes diverse sources contributing significantly to energy mix and sustainability goals across regions and economic sectors.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/solar-energy\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Solar Energy<\/strong><\/a>: India\u2019s solar capacity reached 132.85 GW by November 2025, crossing the 100 GW milestone in January 2025. Annual addition was 34.98 GW, showing over 41% growth compared to the previous year, making solar the largest contributor.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Wind Energy<\/strong>: Wind capacity reached 53.99 GW in November 2025, with 5.82 GW added during the year. India ranks among the top countries globally due to favorable wind conditions in southern and western regions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Hydropower<\/strong>: Large hydro capacity stands at 50.35 GW, while small hydro contributes 5.16 GW.
