The area around the Rajmahal Hills is home to forests, wildlife, and local communities who have lived there for generations. These hills also have historical importance, as they have been mentioned in ancient records and have a unique geological makeup that attracts scientists and visitors alike.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Rajmahal Hills<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Location &amp; Geography<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rajmahal Hills are in the far northeastern part of Jharkhand, India, west of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/ganga-river-system\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ganges River<\/a><\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They stretch in a broad northeast\u2013southwest arch for about 120 miles (190 km), almost reaching Dumka.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hills rise up to <\/span><b>1,861 feet (567 meters)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and are part of the northeastern edge of the Chota Nagpur Plateau.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Geological Significance<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hills are made of <\/span><b>basaltic volcanic rocks called the Rajmahal Traps.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are famous for plant fossils from the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods (145-66 million years ago).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These fossils make the area important for studying ancient plants and early geology in India.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Historical Importance<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The town of Rajmahal, located in these hills, was chosen as the capital of Bengal in 1595-96 by Man Singh, a Mughal governor, because of its strategic location on the Ganges and the Teliagarh Pass.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The capital moved to Dacca (now Dhaka, Bangladesh) in 1608, but Rajmahal again served as a capital from 1639 to 1660.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Important historical buildings include the Akbar Mosque (c. 1600 CE) and the palace of Mir Qasim, the 18th-century Nawab of Bengal.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>People &amp;
