It\u00a0<strong>prevents the thyroid<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0<strong>a hormone-producing gland in the neck \u2014 from picking up radioactive iodine,<\/strong>\u00a0which can be released into the atmosphere in a nuclear accident.<\/li>\n<li>Iodine tablets work by\u00a0<strong>filling up the thyroid with a stable version of iodine so that the radioactive kind can\u2019t get in.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>If the thyroid is already packed with potassium iodide, it won\u2019t be able to pick up the harmful iodine that\u2019s left after a nuclear accident.<\/li>\n<li>But potassium iodide\u00a0<strong>doesn\u2019t protect against other kinds of radioactive threats<\/strong>.
