


{"id":9635,"date":"2023-04-21T08:13:51","date_gmt":"2023-04-21T02:43:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=9635"},"modified":"2025-03-29T14:32:04","modified_gmt":"2025-03-29T09:02:04","slug":"biomass-pellets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/biomass-pellets\/","title":{"rendered":"Biomass Pellets"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Biomass Pellets:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>These are a type of renewable fuel made from <strong>organic materials <\/strong>such as wood, agricultural <strong>residues,<\/strong> and energy crops.<\/li>\n<li>These are produced by <strong>compressing organic<\/strong> materials under high pressure.<\/li>\n<li>The compression process removes the moisture content and <strong>increases the energy density of the biomass.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is mandatory in India to use biomass or agricultural residue as combustion fuel along with coal in coal-fired thermal power plants.<\/li>\n<li>The biomass used for co-combustion in the power plants is processed and refined into pellets with a <strong>calorific value comparable to coal.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>These are two kinds\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Torrefied:<\/strong> It is processed at <strong>250-350\u00b0C in the absence of oxygen<\/strong>, leading to the formation of torrefied biomass.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Non-torrefied:<\/strong> In this biomass is shredded, grinded and sent to a pellet reactor, where it is compressed into pellet form with the help of binders such as sawdust, bagasse, molasses, starch and others.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What is Torrefaction?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a thermochemical process that <strong>aims to decrease the water and volatile contents<\/strong> from the biomass, thus improving some of its fuel properties like higher energy density, hydrophobic behaviour, elimination of biological activity etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Key Facts about Central Pollution Control Board<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>statutory body<\/strong> under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.<\/li>\n<li>It was constituted under <strong>the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is entrusted with the <strong>powers and functions<\/strong> under the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981.<\/li>\n<li>It serves as a <strong>field formation and also provides technical services<\/strong> to the Ministry of Environment and Forests of the provisions of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The principal Functions<\/strong> of the CPCB, as spelt out in the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, and the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981 are;\n<ul>\n<li>To promote the <strong>cleanliness of streams and wells<\/strong> in different areas of the States by prevention, control and abatement of water pollution, and<\/li>\n<li>To improve the <strong>quality of air and to prevent<\/strong>, control or abate air pollution in the country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is Biomass?<\/h3>\n<p>Biomass refers to organic matter, such as plant materials and animal waste,that can be used as a source of energy.
