It covers most of the southern part of the country and also spreads into central India. It is one of the largest plateaus in the world, covering about 5 lakh square kilometres. The word \u201cDeccan\u201d comes from the Sanskrit word Dakshina, which means \u201csouth.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Location and Boundaries<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The plateau has a roughly <\/span><b>triangular shape.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the <\/span><b>north,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it is bordered by the<\/span><b> Vindhya and <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/satpura-range\/\" target=\"_blank\">Satpura ranges<\/a>.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the <\/span><b>west,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it is bounded by the <\/span><b>Western Ghats.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the <\/span><b>east,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it extends towards the <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/eastern-ghats\/\" target=\"_blank\">Eastern Ghats<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/bay-of-bengal\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bay of Bengal<\/a>.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To the <\/span><b>west lies the Arabian Sea.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Relief and Physical Features<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Deccan Plateau has an average height of about<\/span><b> 600 metres above sea level.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The land is mostly flat but gently <\/span><b>slopes from west to east,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which is why most rivers flow in that direction.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also includes several smaller plateaus formed due to river erosion. Some important hills in this region include the <\/span><b>Nilgiri, Anaimalai, and <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/cardamom-hills\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cardamom Hills<\/a>.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The highest point is <\/span><b>Doddabetta Peak.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Formation of the Deccan Plateau<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The plateau was formed millions of years ago due to <\/span><b>volcanic activity.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around <\/span><b>65 million years ago,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>Indian Plate moved and collided with the Eurasian Plate<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This caused cracks in the Earth\u2019s surface, allowing lava to flow out<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Repeated lava flows created layers of basalt rock, <\/span><b>forming the Deccan Traps.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over time, erosion shaped the present landscape, including hills, valleys, and rivers<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Climate<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The climate of the Deccan Plateau varies from place to place.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lower regions are generally <\/span><b>hot and tropical<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Higher regions have a <\/span><b>milder, more pleasant climate<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rainfall depends on monsoon winds and is not the same everywhere<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Rivers and Drainage<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many important rivers flow across the plateau.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Major east-flowing rivers include the <\/span><b>Godavari, Krishna, and Kaveri,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which flow into the Bay of Bengal<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some short rivers flow <\/span><b>west into the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/arabian-sea\/\" target=\"_blank\">Arabian Sea<\/a><\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These rivers are important for irrigation, water supply, and hydroelectric power.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Soil and Agriculture<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Different types of soil are found here:<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/black-soil\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Black soil<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is very good for growing cotton<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Red and laterite soils<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are suitable for millets, pulses, and oilseeds<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">River valleys have fertile soil for crops like rice and sugarcane<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agriculture is the main occupation of people living here. It is made up of several smaller plateaus. These were formed over time due to river erosion, which cut and shaped the land into different parts. The three main sub-plateaus are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Maharashtra Plateau<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Maharashtra Plateau forms the northern part of the Deccan Plateau and lies mainly in the state of Maharashtra.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This region is mostly made up of basalt rocks, formed from ancient volcanic lava flows known as the Deccan Traps<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The land looks like a rolling plain because of long-term weathering<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lava layers have created a step-like (trap) landscape, which is a unique feature of this region<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rivers like the Godavari, Bhima, and Krishna flow through this plateau, forming broad and shallow valleys<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The entire region is covered with black cotton soil (regur), which is very fertile and ideal for growing cotton.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Karnataka Plateau (Mysore Plateau)<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Karnataka Plateau lies south of the Maharashtra Plateau and forms the southern part of the Deccan Plateau.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has an average height of about 600\u2013900 metres above sea level<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The land looks like a rolling plateau with gentle slopes<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many rivers such as the Krishna, Kaveri, Tungabhadra, and Sharavati flow through this region<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These rivers, especially those rising from the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/western-ghats\/\" target=\"_blank\">Western Ghats<\/a><\/strong>, have deeply cut the land, dividing it into two parts:<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><b>Malnad<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMalnad\u201d means hill country in Kannada<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has high hills, deep valleys, and dense forests<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This region receives heavy rainfall and is rich in biodiversity<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Maidan (or Maidan region)<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a plain area with low granite hills<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has less rainfall compared to Malnad<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is suitable for agriculture and human settlement<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The highest point here is Mulangiri Peak in the Baba Budan Hills<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Towards the south, the plateau merges with the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/nilgiri-hills\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nilgiri Hills<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Telangana Plateau<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Telangana Plateau lies in the state of Telangana and forms another important part of the Deccan region.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is mainly made up of very old rocks (Archaean gneisses)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The average height is about <\/span><b>500-600 metres.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The southern part is slightly higher than the northern part<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is drained by major rivers like: <\/span><b>Godavari, Krishna and Penneru<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The plateau is divided into two main physical regions:<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Ghats:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These are upland or hilly areas with uneven terrain<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Peneplains:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These are broad, flat, and slightly undulating plains formed after long periods of erosion.
