


{"id":96633,"date":"2026-04-04T16:40:07","date_gmt":"2026-04-04T11:10:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=96633"},"modified":"2026-04-04T16:40:07","modified_gmt":"2026-04-04T11:10:07","slug":"molucca-sea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/molucca-sea\/","title":{"rendered":"Molucca Sea, Location, Geography, Tectonic Activity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An earthquake of magnitude 7.6 struck the Northern Molucca Sea in Indonesia, causing damage, one death, tsunami waves, and multiple aftershocks.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Molucca Sea\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Molucca <\/b><strong>Se<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>a<\/strong>, also known as <\/span><b>Laut Maluku<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Indonesia, is a part of the <\/span><b>western <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/pacific-ocean\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pacific Ocean<\/a>.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>bounded by Sulawesi (Celebes) to the west, Halmahera to the east, and the Sula Islands to the south, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and opens towards the Pacific Ocean through the <\/span><b>Molucca Passage in the northeast.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has a surface area of 77,000 square miles or 200,000 square kilometres and a maximum depth of 4810 m.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Molucca Sea is divided into three zones based on depth and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/ocean-currents\/\" target=\"_blank\">ocean currents<\/a><\/strong>:\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Northern zone<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Located north of the Sula Islands, it is shallow and receives warm waters from the Pacific through ocean currents.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Central zone<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Situated between the Sula and Banggai-Sula Islands, it has intermediate depths (up to around 800 m) and acts as a mixing zone for warm and cooler waters.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Southern zone<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Found south of the Banggai-Sula Islands, it is the deepest region (over 1000 m in places) and experiences upwelling of cool, nutrient-rich waters, making it biologically productive.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Batjan (Bacan) Basin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the <\/span><b>deepest part of the Molucca Sea<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, reaching about 4,810 m (15,780 ft), and is a sediment-filled basin formed on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/oceanic-crust\/\" target=\"_blank\">oceanic crust<\/a><\/strong>. The basin developed due to tectonic interactions among the Eurasian, Philippine Sea, and Australian plates, and lies in an active collision zone.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Molucca Sea <\/span><b>supports abundant marine life <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and is an important fishing ground for local communities. Key fisheries include tuna, snapper, grouper, shrimp, and lobster, with tuna being the most commercially significant.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Molucca Sea region has <\/span><b>several important seaports<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that support trade and economic activity.
