Zones"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Eco-Sensitive Zones:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>As per the <strong>National Wildlife Action Plan<\/strong> (2002-2016), issued by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, <strong>land within 10 km of the boundaries<\/strong> of <strong>national parks and wildlife sanctuaries<\/strong> is to be notified as eco-fragile zones or Eco-Sensitive Zones (ESZ).<\/li>\n<li>While the 10-km rule is implemented as a general principle, the extent of its application can vary.<\/li>\n<li>Areas <strong>beyond 10-km<\/strong> can also be <strong>notified by the Union government<\/strong> as ESZs, if they hold larger ecologically important \u201csensitive corridors\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>It acts as buffer zones around Protected Areas \u2014 national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, tiger reserves, etc. \u2014 so that the wildlife has a transition zone around them.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Significance of ESZ<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Eco-Sensitive Zones are created <strong>as \u201cshock absorbers\u201d for the protected areas<\/strong>, to minimize the negative impact on the \u201cfragile <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/ecosystem\/\" target=\"_blank\">ecosystems<\/a>\u201d by certain human activities taking place nearby.<\/li>\n<li>These areas are <strong>meant to act as a transition zone<\/strong> from areas requiring higher protection to those requiring lesser protection.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Permitted activities in ESZ:<\/strong> Ongoing agricultural or horticultural practices, rainwater harvesting, organic farming, among others.<\/li>\n<li>No commercial mining, stone quarrying, large hydroelectric projects, polluting industries, brick kilns, etc. are allowed in ESZ.<\/li>\n<li>Commercial establishment of hotels, resorts, small-scale non-polluting industries and the construction of civic <strong>amenities are regulated.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What makes Gir unique?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gir PA includes the <strong>Gir National Park<\/strong>, the <strong>Gir Wildlife Sanctuary<\/strong>, the <strong>Paniya Wildlife Sanctuary and the Mitiyala Wildlife Sanctuary,<\/strong> spread across the Junagadh, Amreli and Gir Somnath districts in Gujarat\u2019s Saurashtra region in its
