{"id":96830,"date":"2026-04-06T15:34:46","date_gmt":"2026-04-06T10:04:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=96830"},"modified":"2026-04-06T15:34:46","modified_gmt":"2026-04-06T10:04:46","slug":"indian-softshell-turtle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/indian-softshell-turtle\/","title":{"rendered":"Indian Softshell Turtle"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Indian Softshell Turtle Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, during a routine check police rescued 16 Indian Softshell turtles in Greater Noida.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Indian Softshell Turtle<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indian softshell turtles (Nilssonia gangetica) are one of <\/span><b>the largest freshwater turtle<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> species in the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also known as the <\/span><b>Ganges Softshell turtle.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Appearance<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has <\/span><b>carapace <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(upper shell), which is round to oval shaped, and green in colour with a yellow border.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has a long<\/span><b> neck and tube-like snouts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> help them to extend their nose out of the water to breathe.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The compressed shell, on the other hand, streamlines them, thereby <\/span><b>making them brilliant and fast swimmers.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Habitat:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These turtles inhabit deep rivers, streams, canals, lakes and ponds, typically preferring areas with sandy or muddy bottoms.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They thrive in <\/span><b>turbid water <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and spend most of their time hidden under the sand.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Geographical Distribution: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are found in Afghanistan<\/span><b>, India, Bangladesh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Pakistan.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mainly found in <\/span><b>Indus, Ganges, Meghna, Brahmaputra, Yamuna, Narmada and Mahanandi river basins.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Diet:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Indian softshell <\/span><b>turtles are omnivorous<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, feeding on fish, amphibians, mollusks, insects, carrion and aquatic plants.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These turtles <\/span><b>breed from February to April.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are often maintained in <\/span><b>the temple ponds of<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Orissa where they <\/span><b>are considered sacred.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Threat<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Habitat alteration and destruction, Poaching and illegal trading for traditional medicines, expansion of agriculture, commercial exploitation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Conservation Status<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>IUCN Red List:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Endangered<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Wildlife Protection Act, 1972:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Schedule I<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source:<\/b> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/cities\/delhi\/how-16-indian-softshell-turtles-were-rescued-in-greater-noida-10615200\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">IE<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Indian Softshell Turtles are one of the largest freshwater turtle species in the world.
