It started as a small local kingdom and gradually became stronger over time. The rulers of this dynasty played an important role in developing their region and maintaining stability.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>History of the Wodeyar Dynasty<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wodeyar Dynasty was founded in <\/span><b>1399 by Yaduraya Wodeyar,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who ruled Mysore under the <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/vijayanagara-empire\/\" target=\"_blank\">Vijayanagara Empire<\/a> until 1423.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> After him, his successors continued to rule, but the kingdom remained small and under the control of the Vijayanagara Empire for a long time.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the fall of the Vijayanagara Empire in 1565, Mysore became independent and remained so until 1799. During this period, <\/span><b>Raja Wodeyar I<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> expanded the kingdom and strengthened its position. In <\/span><b>1610, he shifted the capital from Mysore to Srirangapatna,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which was naturally protected by the <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/kaveri-river-system\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kaveri River<\/a>.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Later rulers like <\/span><b>Kanthirava Narasaraja I <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expanded the kingdom further, reaching areas like Trichy. The kingdom reached its peak under <\/span><b>Chikka Devaraja Wodeyar,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who improved administration by dividing the state into departments and introducing a proper taxation system.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From 1760 to 1799, the Wodeyar rulers had very little real power. The actual control was in the hands of military leaders like Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan, who expanded the kingdom but also fought wars with the British East India Company.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1799, Tipu Sultan was defeated and killed in the <\/span><b>Battle of Srirangapatna<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. After this, the Wodeyar rulers were restored to the throne, but with a smaller kingdom under British control.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the reign of <\/span><b>Krishnaraja Wadiyar III (1799-1868),<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Mysore came under British influence. Later rulers like Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV and Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar continued to rule under the British system until India became independent.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Wodeyar Dynasty Significance<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wodeyar Dynasty played an important role in the history of Mysore and South India. It is known for its long rule, stability, and contributions to culture and development.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of its main contributions was providing stable and continuous governance for many centuries. Even during difficult times, the rulers helped maintain order and administration in the region.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dynasty also contributed to the growth of the kingdom by expanding its territory and strengthening its administration, especially under rulers like Chikka Devaraja Wodeyar.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wodeyar rulers were great supporters of art, music, literature, and architecture.
