{"id":97357,"date":"2026-04-09T12:24:30","date_gmt":"2026-04-09T06:54:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=97357"},"modified":"2026-04-09T13:15:57","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T07:45:57","slug":"lead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/lead\/","title":{"rendered":"Lead"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Lead Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A study by Toxics Link, a Delhi-based research and advocacy group, has found high levels of lead contamination in soil near battery recycling units across Delhi-NCR.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Lead<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>naturally occurring element<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found in small amounts in the earth\u2019s crust.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Properties<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>soft, silvery white or grayish metal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Group 14 (IVa) of the periodic table.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lead has a bright lustre and is <\/span><b>a dense, ductile, very soft, highly malleable<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, bluish-white metal that has <\/span><b>poor electrical conductivity.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also <\/span><b>highly resistant to corrosion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and because of this property is used to contain corrosive liquids (e.g. sulphuric acid).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Occurrence:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is usually found in <\/span><b>ore with zinc, silver and copper<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is extracted together with these metals.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main <\/span><b>lead mineral is galena (PbS).<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Other common varieties include <\/span><b>cerussite<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (PbCO3) and <\/span><b>angelsite <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(PbSO4).<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Uses of Lead<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The principal use of lead is for <\/span><b>lead-acid batteries for vehicles,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> backup emergency systems, the telecoms sector and fork lift trucks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Lead is also used in <\/span><b>rolled and extruded products<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, compounds in the glass and plastics industries, shot and ammunition and for radiation shielding.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Lead Impact on Human Health<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>highly toxic<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to humans and the environment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exposure to lead <\/span><b>can affect multiple body systems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is particularly harmful to young children and women of child-bearing age.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lead is distributed to the brain, liver, kidney and bones.
