{"id":97934,"date":"2026-04-12T14:02:06","date_gmt":"2026-04-12T08:32:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=97934"},"modified":"2026-04-12T16:11:48","modified_gmt":"2026-04-12T10:41:48","slug":"punatsangchhu-i-hydroelectric-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/punatsangchhu-i-hydroelectric-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Punatsangchhu-I Hydroelectric Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Punatsangchhu-I Hydroelectric Project Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Work on Bhutan&#8217;s 1,200 MW Punatsangchhu-I hydropower project has resumed recently after a seven-year suspension, with India&#8217;s Power Minister attending a key concrete pouring ceremony marking the restart of dam construction.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Punatsangchhu-I Hydroelectric Project<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a<\/span><b> 1200 MW run-of-the-river <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scheme located on the<strong> left bank<\/strong> of the <\/span><b>Punatsangchhu River<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the <\/span><b>Southern Himalaya<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>s<\/strong>, about 80 km east of <\/span><b>Bhutan\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">capital Thimphu.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project\u2019s <\/span><b>concrete dam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is 130 m in height by 239 m in length.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The facility includes an<\/span><b> underground powerhouse<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that will generate 1200 MW power via six 200 MW turbines.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is presently the <\/span><b>largest hydropower project under construction in Bhutan.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project is being <\/span><b>implemented by the Punatsangchhu-I Hydroelectric Project Authority (PHPA),<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an <\/span><b>autonomous body of<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Royal <\/span><b>Government of Bhutan and the Government of India.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>funded by the Government of India (GoI): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40% Grant and 60% Loan at 10% annual interest, repayable in 12 equated annual installments commencing one year after the mean date of operation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All the <\/span><b>surplus powe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>r<\/strong> from the project will be <\/span><b>exported to India.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndtvprofit.com\/india\/work-resumes-on-1-200-mw-punatsangchhu-i-hydropower-project-after-seven-year-pause-11344564\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NDTV<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Punatsangchhu-I is a 1200 MW run-of-river project on the Punatsangchhu River in southern Himalayas, about 80 km east of Thimphu.
