{"id":9970,"date":"2023-04-23T12:46:40","date_gmt":"2023-04-23T07:16:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=9970"},"modified":"2025-03-29T16:33:58","modified_gmt":"2025-03-29T11:03:58","slug":"ballistic-missile-interceptor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/ballistic-missile-interceptor\/","title":{"rendered":"Ballistic Missile Interceptor"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Why in news?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>India entered an elite club of nations with the capability to fire a Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) interceptor from a naval platform.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Prior to this, DRDO has successfully demonstrated land-based ballistic missile defence system with capability to neutralize ballistic missile threats, emerging from adversaries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>India\u2019s Ballistic Missile Defence Programme:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>India launched the BMD program <strong>after Kargil war in 1999<\/strong> to counter the enemy nation\u2019s widening spectrum of ballistic missiles that usually <strong>delivered both conventional and nuclear warheads.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Two-tires of BMD system<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Prithvi Air Defence missile<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It was originally tested in 2006 and is capable of intercepting and destroying missiles at exo-atmospheric altitudes ranging from 50 to 180 kilometres.<\/li>\n<li>The Pradyumna interceptor has already replaced the Prithvi Air Defence BMD.<\/li>\n<li>Exo-atmospheric missiles are capable of completing missions in the Earth&#8217;s upper atmosphere.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Advanced Air Defence\u00a0 Missile<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The second layer is Advanced Air Defence (AAD) Missile for lower altitude interception.<\/li>\n<li>It was first tested in 2007 and designed to knock down hostile missiles in the endo-atmosphere at <strong>altitudes of 15-40 KM.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The endo-atmospheric missiles are the ones that operate within the earth&#8217;s atmosphere that covers an altitude below 100 KM.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1) What is a nuclear warhead?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A nuclear warhead is a type of explosive device that uses nuclear reactions to release an enormous amount of energy in the form of a nuclear explosion.
