The report showcases India\u2019s strong legal and institutional framework, particularly under the <\/span><b>Biological Diversity Act, 2002<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and its efforts to promote sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) Background<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The concept of ABS gained global importance with the adoption of the <\/span><b>Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during the <\/span><b>Rio Earth Summit 1992<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier, biological resources were treated as the \u201ccommon heritage of mankind,\u201d but this led to exploitation by developed countries.
