It was <\/span><b>one of the largest eruptions <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the<\/span><b> 20th century.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since then,<\/span><b> new lava domes have grown inside the trench left by this eruption.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Santiaguito is the youngest of these dome<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s, having been <\/span><b>created around 1922.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>massive Santiaguito dome complex <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has been<\/span><b> growing ever since<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is accompanied by <\/span><b>continuous explosions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>most of them minor.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Santiaguito lava-dome complex is <\/span><b>one of the most active volcanic areas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Guatemala and worldwide.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>belches smoke and ash on a regular basis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but<\/span><b> sometimes emits lava and pyroclastic flows.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It reaches about 2,500 meters (8,202 feet).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It currently has <\/span><b>four craters, one of which is active.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This gives it a completely different appearance than most volcanoes; it <\/span><b>resembles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a <\/span><b>large rock with multiple peaks.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>last major explosion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> occurred on April 25, <\/span><b>2010<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, when 10 people were killed by falling rocks after an eruption.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>deadliest explosion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> occurred in <\/span><b>1929<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, when more than 2500 people were killed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/video\/newsfeed\/2026\/4\/21\/video-moment-hikers-get-caught-in-guatemala-volcano-eruption\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ALJ<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Santiaguito Volcano is an active volcano located in western Guatemala near the city of Quetzaltenango.
