The Dadasaheb Phalke Award, established in 1969 and named after the pioneer of Indian cinema, Dhundiraj Govind Phalke, is the highest accolade in the Indian film industry. Phalke directed India’s first feature film, “Raja Harishchandra,” in 1913. Recipients of this prestigious award are honored with a shawl, the Swarna Kamal (Golden Lotus) medallion, and a cash prize of Rs. 10 lakh.

In 2021, the award was presented to celebrated actor Rajnikanth for his outstanding contributions to Indian cinema. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 and 2021 awards were postponed, with the 68th National Film Awards finally being presented on September 30, 2022, by President Droupadi Murmu and Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur.
