The World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) recently suspended the membership of the Delhi Zoo over concerns about the treatment of its lone African elephant named Shankar.
About World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA):
- It is the umbrella organization for the world zoo and aquarium community.
- Established in 1935, it is the only organisation representing zoos and aquariums at the global level.

Q1: What is the Central Zoo Authority (CZA)?
Central Zoo Authority (CZA) was established as a statutory body under the Ministry of Environment & Forests by the Government of India in the year 1992. The main objective of this Authority is to complement and strengthen the national effort in conservation of rich biodiversity of the country, particularly the fauna. Other objectives of this Authority include enforcing minimum standards and norms for upkeep and healthcare of animals in Indian zoos and to control mushrooming of unplanned and ill-conceived.
