Narayana Guru\u2019s installation of a Shivalinga at Aravipuram in 1888, known as the Aravipuram Movement, was a significant act of defiance against caste-based restrictions, sparking the movement\u2019s growth.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The SNDP Movement aimed to uplift the Ezhavas and other marginalized communities through education, social equality, and political representation. Leaders like Dr Palpu and poet Kumaran Asan played pivotal roles in advancing the movement\u2019s goals and bringing transformative reforms to Kerala\u2019s society.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SNDP Movement Evolution<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sri Narayana Guru Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) movement evolved from the<\/span><b> Aravipuram Movement,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> a significant act by Narayana Guru in 1888, where he installed a Shivalinga at Aravipuram. This act defied caste-based restrictions on religious rituals, symbolizing a challenge to the social order. It marked the beginning of a movement focused on the social and spiritual upliftment of the Ezhava community, which comprised 26% of Kerala's population.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 1889, the Aravipuram Keshtra Yogam (AKY) was established to advance the material and spiritual development of the Ezhavas.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Foundation of SNDP:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> In 1903, the SNDP was formally registered under the Indian Companies Act. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/sree-narayana-guru\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Narayana Guru<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> served as its permanent chairman, while Kumaran Asan, a renowned poet and disciple of Guru, became its general secretary.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Dr. Palpu <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">also played a crucial role in promoting social justice through movements like the Ezhava Memorial.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SNDP Movement Objectives<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><b>SNDP movement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> aimed to empower the Ezhavas and other marginalized groups by promoting social equality, education, and political representation, ultimately seeking to dismantle the oppressive <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/caste-system-in-india\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Caste System<\/strong><\/a>. This movement's primary objectives are:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They oppose the predominance of Brahmanas and other upper castes in general.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To enhance the position of the backwards castes in the Caste hierarchy by copying upper caste lifestyles, such as higher education and distinguished occupations.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2018Ethnic\u2019 awareness and politicization were generally established as a result of these activities among diverse caste groups.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SNDP Movement Key Leaders<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sree Narayana Guru, a prominent social reformer, led the SNDP Movement to uplift the marginalized Ezhava community, promoting social equality, education, and spiritual enlightenment. Along with key figures like Dr Palpu and poet Kumaran Asan, the movement challenged caste-based discrimination and brought significant social reforms in Kerala.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sree Narayana Guru<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sree Narayana Guru (1856\u20131928) was a prominent social reformer, philosopher, and spiritual guide, born on August 22, 1856, in Chempazhanty, a village near Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, to Madan Asan and Kuttiyamma. He was a member of the Ezhava community, often referred to as \u2018Avarna.\u2019 He championed the principles of social equality, education, and spiritual enlightenment for all, regardless of caste or creed.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Aruvippuram Movement (1888): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Narayana Guru himself created a Shivalinga at Aravipuram a top Shivaratri in 1888, using a stone from the Neyyar river.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He installed a Shiva idol at <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Aravipuram<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, symbolising resistance against social injustice, particularly the caste-based restrictions that barred lower castes from temple entry. He established <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sivagiri Mutt<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in 1904.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><b>Literary Contributions:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> He authored several important works, including <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Advaitha Deepika, Atmavilasam, Daiva Dasakam, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Brahmavidya Panchakam.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Philosophy: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\"Oru Jathi, Oru Matham, Oru Daivam, Manushyanu\" translates to \"One Caste, One Religion, One God for Mankind\" and is a core message advocated by Shri Narayana Guru.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Established SNDP:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Under the Indian Companies Act, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sri Narayana Guru Dharma Paripalana Yogam<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was established in <\/span><b>1903<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. He was appointed as the Chairman.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Ezhava\u2019s right to attend public schools, access to government services, and political representation were all addressed by the SNDP.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11397 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/d35xcwcl37xo08.cloudfront.net\/upsc-exam-wp-uploads\/2025\/05\/Sree-Narayana-Guru.webp\" alt=\"Sree Narayana Guru\" width=\"424\" height=\"246\" \/><\/p>\r\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr Palpu<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p><b>Dr. Palpu<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, an Ezhava physician and philanthropist, proposed the formation of Ezhava Mahajana Sabha to fight for Ezhavas' rights. Inspired by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/swami-vivekananda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Swami Vivekananda<\/strong><\/span><\/a>'s<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0advice, he collaborated with Sree Narayana Guru on developing Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam. The organization was officially registered on May 15, 1903, with Dr. Palpu as Vice President.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kumaran Asan<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p><b>Kumaran Asan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (1873-1924) was a renowned Indian social reformer, poet, and writer who played a vital role in the upliftment of the Ezhava community in Kerala.
