World Oceans Day History<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

World Ocean Day was first pitched in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro by Canada\u2019s International Centre for Ocean Development and the Ocean Institute of Canada. However , the day was officially recognised in 2008 by the United Nations. Since 2008, World Ocean Day has been celebrated all over the globe with the aim of making people realise the importance of ocean conservation, its benefit and human dependence on oceans.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

World Oceans Day 2025 Theme\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

The World Ocean Day 2025 theme \u201cSustainable Fishing Means More\u201d focuses on the significant role of opting for sustainable fishing and its role in ocean conservation. A population of over 3 billion people is dependent on seafood as a primary source of protein and 10% of world population livelihood depends on fishing. By adopting sustainable fishing, marine ecosystems stay productive as well as resilient.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Why World Oceans Day is Celebrated<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

World Ocean Day is celebrated for the following reasons:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

  • Over 50% of oxygen we breathe comes from oceans.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  • Oceans help regulate climate and feed billions of people.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t

    World Ocean Week 2025<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

    Building on the momentum of World Oceans Day, World Ocean Week 2025 will be observed from June 8 to June 14, providing a week-long opportunity to engage in awareness campaigns, coastal cleanups, educational webinars, and sustainable ocean advocacy. This extended celebration deepens engagement and helps drive long-term change.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

    Five Oceans of the World<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

    The world oceans have been divided into five categories:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

    1. Pacific Ocean \u2013 Is spread across Asia and Americas and home to Mariana Trench, the Earth\u2019s deepest point.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
    2. Atlantic Ocean \u2013 Atlantic Ocean, the second largest ocean, connects Europe, Americas, playing an important role in climate and world commerce.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
    3. The Indian Ocean \u2013 lies between Africa, Asia and Australia and is known for its monsoon and warm waters.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
    4. Arctic Ocean \u2013 Surrounds the north pole and is the shallowest and smallest ocean.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
    5. Southern Ocean \u2013 Encircling Antarctica, it plays a critical role in driving global ocean currents and is now officially recognised by the International Hydrographic Organisation.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n
