They vary in composition, species diversity, and non-biological components, involving energy flow and material cycling. It can be as large as the entire Biosphere itself or as small as a log of wood, each hosting the various components of the ecosystem interacting together.<\/p>\r\n<p>The study of ecosystems focuses on their structure and function. These complex systems face threats that can degrade, fragment, or destroy them, impacting the delicate balance crucial for supporting life. Understanding these threats is vital for preserving biodiversity and the health of the ecosystems globally.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Components of Ecosystem<\/h2>\r\n<p>An ecosystem consists of two main components: biotic and abiotic.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Biotic components:<\/strong>\u00a0These are the living organisms present in an ecosystem, including:\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Producers<\/strong>\u00a0(autotrophs): Organisms that produce their food through\u00a0<strong>photosynthesis\u00a0<\/strong>(plants, algae, and certain bacteria) are autotrophs. They form the base of the food chain and are essential for energy flow in ecosystems.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Consumers<\/strong>\u00a0(heterotrophs): These are organisms that consume other organisms for food.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Primary consumers (herbivores):\u00a0<\/strong>Organisms that feed directly on producers. Examples: deer, rabbits, grasshoppers, etc.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Secondary consumers (carnivores):<\/strong>\u00a0Organisms that feed on primary consumers. Examples: snakes, foxes, owls etc.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Tertiary consumers (top predators):<\/strong>\u00a0Organisms at the top of the food chain that feed on secondary consumers. Examples: lions, sharks, eagles, humans, etc.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Decomposers<\/strong>\u00a0(detritivores): Organisms that break down dead organic matter, releasing nutrients back into the ecosystem. Examples: bacteria, fungi, earthworms). They play a crucial role in nutrient cycling.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Keystone species<\/strong>: These are species that play a disproportionately large role in maintaining the structure and functioning of an ecosystem relative to their abundance.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Their removal or decline can have cascading effects on the entire ecosystem.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Ecological Niche<\/strong>: A niche is the\u00a0<strong>functional role or position of a species<\/strong>\u00a0within an ecosystem, including its behaviour, activities, and interactions with the biotic and abiotic environment.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Each species occupies a unique niche, allowing for coexistence and efficient resource utilisation.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Abiotic components<\/strong>: These are the non-living physical and chemical factors present in an ecosystem, including\u00a0<strong>Sunlight<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Temperature<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Water<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Soil<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Air<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Minerals and Nutrients.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>Types of Ecosystem<\/h3>\r\n<p>Ecosystems can be classified based on various factors, such as their physical characteristics, location, and dominant species. Here are some common types of ecosystems:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Terrestrial Ecosystems<\/strong>:\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Forest Ecosystems (tropical rainforests, temperate forests, boreal forests)<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Grassland Ecosystems (savannas, prairies, steppes)<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Desert Ecosystems (hot and cold deserts)<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Tundra Ecosystems (Arctic tundra, Alpine tundra)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Aquatic Ecosystems<\/strong>:\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Freshwater Ecosystems (lakes, rivers, ponds, wetlands)<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Marine Ecosystems (oceans, coral reefs, estuaries, mangroves)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Artificial Ecosystems<\/strong>:\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Urban Ecosystems (cities, parks, gardens)<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Agricultural Ecosystems (croplands, pastures, orchards)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>Ecotone<\/h3>\r\n<p><strong>Ecotone<\/strong>\u00a0is a\u00a0<strong>transition zone between two ecosystems,<\/strong>\u00a0varying in width and occurring locally or regionally.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>It hosts species from both adjacent ecosystems and includes examples like\u00a0<strong>marshlands, mangrove forests,\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>estuaries.<\/strong><\/li>\r\n\t<li>Generally, the biodiversity in an ecotone is higher than the two constituting ecosystems. This is called the<strong>\u00a0edge effect.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Functioning of Ecosystem<\/h2>\r\n<p>Ecosystems function through various processes and interactions between their biotic and abiotic components. These processes include the flow of energy and material (nutrients) among the components of the ecosystem, which are essential for maintaining the balance and sustainability of the ecosystem.<\/p>\r\n<h3>Productivity<\/h3>\r\n<p>Ecosystems rely on solar energy, which plants convert into biomass through photosynthesis, a process known as\u00a0<strong>Primary Production<\/strong>. The rate of this production is called\u00a0<strong>Productivity<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Standing crop and Biomass:<\/strong>\u00a0Standing crop refers to the mass of living material (organisms) at a specific time within a trophic level.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>It can be measured either as\u00a0<strong>biomass<\/strong>\u00a0(fresh or dry weight) or as the\u00a0<strong>number of organisms per unit area<\/strong>.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Measuring biomass in terms of\u00a0<strong>dry weight<\/strong>\u00a0is more accurate because it accounts for variations due to water content.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Productivity is categorised into:<\/strong>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Gross Primary Productivity (GPP):<\/strong>\u00a0It is the total organic matter produced by photosynthesis. Plants use a portion of this for respiration.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Net Primary Productivity (NPP):<\/strong>\u00a0The remaining organic matter after subtracting respiration from GPP, is available for consumption by heterotrophs (herbivores and decomposers) and is called NPP.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Secondary Productivity<\/strong>: The rate at which consumers form new organic matter.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Factors for high NPP:\u00a0<\/strong>Types of plant species, environmental conditions, nutrient availability and photosynthetic capacity influence productivity. Hence, it varies across ecosystems.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Coral<\/strong><strong>\u00a0Reefs<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Tropical Rainforests<\/strong>\u00a0have high productivity.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Total annual NPP of the biosphere:<\/strong>\u00a0It is\u00a0<strong>about 170 billion tons\u00a0<\/strong>of organic matter.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Despite covering\u00a0<strong>70% of the Earth,<\/strong>\u00a0oceans contribute only\u00a0<strong>55 billion tons<\/strong>, with the rest coming from land.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>Energy Flow<\/h3>\r\n<p>Energy is the driving force that sustains life in ecosystems. The primary source of energy is the\u00a0<strong>sun<\/strong>, and this energy is transferred through the ecosystem via food chains and food webs.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Trophic levels:<\/strong>\u00a0Organisms in an ecosystem occupy specific positions based on their feeding relationships. These positions are called\u00a0<strong>trophic levels<\/strong>.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>The trophic levels include\u00a0<strong>Producers\u00a0<\/strong>(Autotrophs),\u00a0<strong>Primary consumers\u00a0<\/strong>(Herbivores)<strong>, Secondary consumers, and Tertiary consumers.<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>10% Law and Energy transfer:\u00a0<\/strong>Approximately\u00a0<strong>10% of energy<\/strong>\u00a0is transferred from one trophic level to the next in a food chain.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>As energy flows through the food chain, some are lost as\u00a0<strong>heat<\/strong>\u00a0during\u00a0<strong>metabolic processes<\/strong>\u00a0and due to\u00a0<strong>inefficiencies<\/strong>.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Consequently, the\u00a0<strong>number of trophic levels<\/strong>\u00a0in an ecosystem is limited by the\u00a0<strong>available energy<\/strong>.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Energy flows unidirectionally\u00a0<\/strong>from the sun to producers and then to consumers.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>This process aligns with the<strong>\u00a0first law of thermodynamics\u00a0<\/strong>(conservation of energy).<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Food Chains and Webs:<\/strong>\u00a0These represent the energy flow in an ecosystem, from producers to the top predators.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>A food chain<\/strong>\u00a0is a linear sequence of organisms where each organism is consumed by the next at the higher trophic level.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>A food web<\/strong>\u00a0is a network of interconnected food chains that show more complex interactions.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Organisms depend on producers directly or indirectly for their food.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Types of food chains:\u00a0<\/strong>Grazing food chain, Detritus food chain, and Parasitic food chain.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Ecological Pyramid:\u00a0<\/strong>These are\u00a0<strong>graphical representations\u00a0<\/strong>that illustrate the relative amounts of producers, consumers, and energy at different trophic levels in an ecosystem.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Types of Pyramids:<\/strong>\u00a0Pyramid of Biomass, Pyramid of Numbers, and Pyramid of Energy.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>Nutrient Cycle<\/h3>\r\n<p>Nutrient cycling is the continuous movement and exchange of essential elements (carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, water, etc.) between the biotic and abiotic components of an ecosystem. These cycles are driven by various biological, geological, and chemical processes.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Hydrological cycle:\u00a0<\/strong>Also known as the\u00a0<strong>water cycle<\/strong>, it is the continuous movement of water through different reservoirs on Earth, including the atmosphere, surface water, groundwater, and living organisms.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>It involves processes such as evaporation, transpiration, condensation, precipitation, and surface runoff.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Carbon cycle:\u00a0<\/strong>This involves the movement of carbon dioxidebetween the atmosphere, biosphere (living organisms), hydrosphere (water bodies), and lithosphere (Earth's crust and mantle).\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>The main processes involved are photosynthesis, respiration, decomposition, combustion, and geological processes like\u00a0<strong>weathering\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>volcanic activity.<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Nitrogen cycle:\u00a0<\/strong>This is the\u00a0<strong>continuous transformation\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>transfer of nitrogen\u00a0<\/strong>between the atmosphere, biosphere, and lithosphere.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Key processes include\u00a0<strong>nitrogen fixation<\/strong>\u00a0(conversion of atmospheric nitrogen into usable forms),\u00a0<strong>nitrification\u00a0<\/strong>(conversion of ammonia to nitrites and nitrates), and\u00a0<strong>denitrification\u00a0<\/strong>(conversion of nitrates back to atmospheric nitrogen).<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Phosphorus cycle:\u00a0<\/strong>Phosphorus is primarily obtained from\u00a0<strong>rocks and minerals\u00a0<\/strong>through weathering processes.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>It is then taken up by plants, consumed by animals, and returned to the environment through decomposition and excretion.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Sulphur cycle:\u00a0<\/strong>Sulphur is released into the atmosphere through\u00a0<strong>volcanic activity\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>industrial processes<\/strong>, and it is taken up by plants and microorganisms.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>It is then cycled through the ecosystem through processes like decomposition, respiration, and precipitation.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>Ecological Succession<\/h3>\r\n<p>Ecological succession is the gradual process by which communities of plant and animal species in an ecosystem are replaced over time, leading to a relatively stable climax community.
